Israel Adesanya's MMA career has reached a turning point, and each bout might determine how he develops in the future.
On Saturday he will participate in his longest-awaited non-title bout since 2016 at Riyadh. A win will maintain "The Last Stylebender" as one of the contenders for championship but a loss will reduce his chances in the UFC competition.
On Saturday he will participate in his longest-awaited non-title bout since 2016 at Riyadh. A win will maintain "The Last Stylebender" as one of the contenders for championship but a loss will reduce his chances in the UFC competition.
In August of last year he came back to fight current champion Dricus Du Plessis in order to resolve his pending issues. Despite his determination the battle turned out to be unsuccessful. The fourth round saw Adesanya lose his attempt to recover the title when he fell victim to a rear-naked choke.
Since his double loss stretch and his four-fight losing record which has led him to facing Alex Pereira in April who now wears the light heavyweight champion belt. His upcoming fight must secure victory since defense remains more critical than securing a comeback. Army can declare victory in this fight because his future success depends on it among the top middleweight division fighters.
This marks a career milestone that has him pursuing ranking position instead of championship wins. A Saudi Arabia victory stands necessary for him to achieve triple wins as middleweight champion. Retiring and missing future title discussions will be the result if he fails to win.
His confrontation with Imavov could be a decisive factor in determining whether he still has what it takes to retake the throne because the path back to the top is perilous.
“I’m not thinking like that,” Adesanya said, “I’m just going in there ready to dominate. I’m not thinking, ‘I don’t want another loss.’ That’s a weird way to frame it, because [I’d just be] thinking of what I don’t want. you’re tapping into that, ‘Oh, I can’t lose, I can’t lose,’ your brain just recognizes ‘lose, lose, lose’.
The public already considers Adesanya to be the best UFC middleweight in history yet he faces a showdown with legendary middleweight champion Anderson Silva in the near future. His outstanding achievements and leadership established a record which exceeds both his current shortcomings and his predecessors' achievements.
Instead of dwelling on possible back-to-back losses and diminishing chances to regain his championship Adesanya directs his attention to obtaining victory. The successful defeat of Imavov would strengthen his plan while possibly motivating him to achieve historical feats at middleweight.
