On Tuesday, the Saudi Arabian football club Al Hilal will aim for their 28th consecutive victory in competitive matches, potentially establishing a world record for a top-tier team.
Empowered by the goal-scoring prowess of Serbia forward Aleksandar Mitrović during Neymar's extended absence, Al Hilal is pursuing the record in the second leg of the Asian Champions League quarterfinals against domestic adversary Al Ittihad.
The acknowledged record for most wins, standing at 27, was established by The New Saints during the 2016-17 season, surpassing the achievement of the renowned Ajax team inspired by Johan Cruyff in the 1971-72 season.
Al Hilal's impressive season comes on the heels of the club investing approximately 350 million euros ($380 million) in player transfers, following its effective nationalization by the Saudi sovereign wealth entity, the Public Investment Fund. The control of the club lies in the hands of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
The streak encompasses 16 matches in the Saudi league, three in the domestic cup, and eight in the Asian Champions League.
“It’s a world record but it’s not a title,” coach Jorge Jesus said. “Titles are the league, the cup and the Asian Champions League.”
The team's last non-victory occurred on September 21 in a 1-1 draw against league rival Damac. A mere four weeks later, Neymar sustained a significant knee injury while representing Brazil.
Riyadh-based club carries a 2-0 advantage to Jeddah for a clash against Al Ittihad. The victor will progress to the semifinals, where they will face either Al Nassr and Cristiano Ronaldo or Al Ain from the United Arab Emirates.
