The current boxing superstar effortlessly defended his undisputed super middleweight championship by outclassing Jermell Charlo.
Charlo faced a formidable challenge by moving up two weight classes and relinquishing his undisputed super welterweight title for the most significant fight of his career. However, it became evident that there are distinct skill levels in the world of boxing, and Charlo either was ill-prepared or unwilling to contend with one of the world's top pound-for-pound fighters.
Canelo commented on the knockdown, “I worked the whole fight on going to the body, and then I changed it up. That’s what happens when you change the punch"
Canelo aggressively pursued Charlo and swiftly recognized that his opponent was outclassed. While Charlo spent much of the match with his back against the ropes, Canelo relentlessly advanced, targeting the body with powerful punches, employing a precise jab, and occasionally landing hooks to the head.
Alvarez found himself in a situation where he had to closely track Charlo and wait for the right moment to unleash power shots. That moment arrived in the seventh round when a body shot was followed by a right hand to Charlo's temple, causing Charlo to take a knee.
As the later rounds progressed and fans started leaving due to Canelo's clear lead, it seemed that Canelo grew frustrated with Charlo's reluctance to 1ly participate. This frustration was reflected in the scorecards, with Canelo winning by margins of 119-108, 118-109, and 118-109.
Canelo (59-2-2, 39 KOs) effectively defended his undisputed super middleweight championship for the third time. He achieved the unification of all four major titles by knocking out Caleb Plant in November 2021.
Following a setback in his bid for the light heavyweight title against Dmitry Bivol, the 33-year-old superstar has now secured victory in three consecutive fights, with his next opponent yet to be determined. While a highly anticipated megafight with undisputed welterweight champion Terence Crawford seems like an attr1 option, it's worth noting that Crawford would need to move up in weight by 21 pounds for such a bout, and he is currently involved in discussions regarding a potential rematch with Errol Spence.
As for Charlo, he remains the holder of the IBF, WBA, and WBC titles and has the option to return to the 154-pound division to defend those championships. Charlo expressed his interest in a bout with Crawford, but given his recent performance, it's doubtful that Crawford would be inclined to accept the challenge.
