Atlanta FaZe defeated 100 Thieves in the Call of Duty: A Flash Point in the Modern Warfare III grand final in a nail-biting match at the Esports World Cup in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Despite the 2-1 score, FaZe was able to capture the $600,000 first prize and 1000 Esports World Cup club points.
After a spirited fighting, 100 Thieves who emerged as second eventually took home $320,000 and 600 points. Both teams advanced to the final with decisive wins earlier in the day: 100 Thieves succeeded to defeat the Vancouver Surge with a score of 3-0 and FaZe defeated OpTic Gaming by a score of 3-1.
There are 16 teams in the tournament and grouped in four different groups, and the $1. 8 million event featured intense double-elimination rounds where all the games were played in the best of five format. A thrilling best of seven grand final was the climax of the tense sudden-death playoffs, played in the same best of five down format as the group winners from the two groups.
They kicked off the grand final with a 250-202 victory on Sub Base Hardpoint. But 100 Thieves did not take the loss lightly and bounced back with two very closely fought wins, 6-5 on Invasion Search and Destroy and a 3-2 win on Highrise Control.
That was all FaZe from that point forward. Having triumphed over 100 Thieves with a score of 6-1 on Rio, they were able to defeat the latter on Invasion Control with the final score of 3-2 to become the champion. The had definitely trounced Karachi Hardpoint, 250-109.
McArthur “Cellium” Jovel of Atlanta was awarded MVP together with $50,000 bounty.
FaZe demonstrated their fighting spirit by coming back to win even in the semifinals. OpTic started out well, winning 250-92 on Karachi Hardpoint, but Atlanta rallied for three straight victories: 6-1 on Highrise Search and Destroy, 3-1 on Invasion Control, and most overwhelmingly 250-128 on Sub Base Hardpoint.
In the second semifinal match, 100 Thieves completely outclassed the Vancouver Surge with a 250-184 win on 6 Star Hardpoint and followed it up with a 6-3 sweep on Highrise Search and Destroy before winning the series 3-2 on Karachi Control.
The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III event's prize pool, which consists of both cash awards and Esports World Cup club points, is broken down as follows:
1. $600,000, 1,000 points -- Atlanta FaZe
2. $320,000, 600 points -- 100 Thieves
3-4. $160,000, 275 points -- OpTic Gaming, Vancouver Surge
5-8. $80,000, 60 points -- Cloud9, Boston Breach, Toronto Ultra, Carolina Royal Ravens

13-16. $20,000, no points -- OMiT Brooklyn, G2 Esports, Team Heretics, Team Falcons
It was sweet redemption for FaZe, more than just a win. They came back from a dismal top-6 result at CDL Champions to win the Esports World Cup, an enormously significant championship in and of itself. Even if they may not be the CDL World Champions, their victory at the EWC confirms their status as elite athletes and demonstrates their tenacity and willpower.
