Atlético Madrid’s Season Unravels as Espanyol and Mbappé Stage Comeback to Force a Draw

Atlético Madrid’s Season Unravels as Espanyol and Mbappé Stage Comeback to Force a Draw

With two goals to propel Real Madrid past a resolute Leganés in a grueling 3-2 victory, Kylián Mbappé once again displayed his genius, tying Barcelona at the top of La Liga on Saturday. As they slipped further out of contention, Atletico Madrid's dreams of winning the championship suffered yet another setback.

Mbappé has been nothing short of spectacular since joining Madrid; his 33 goals in all competitions now match Cristiano Ronaldo's total from his 2009–10 season start, highlighting his immediate influence on the Spanish powerhouse.

“We know what he represents for Real Madrid, and he has given me lots of advice. But, as I always say, we have to win titles.” With two months remaining in this campaign, Mbappé mentioned tying Ronaldo's record. “It is very special.”

A relegation-threatened Leganés showed far more tenacity than expected at the Santiago Bernabéu, and what appeared to be an easy victory for the defending champions swiftly descended into a tense match. Despite being widely predicted to be a simple three-point victory for Madrid, the match turned into a hotly contested affair with of unexpected turns.

In the 32nd minute, Mbappé broke the tie by coolly scoring from the penalty spot to give Madrid the advantage. However, Leganés did not waste any time in unleashing a quick counterattack, shocking the home crowd shortly after halftime. With lightning speed, fullback Valentin Rosier ripped down the right wing before whipping in a precise delivery to Óscar Rodríguez. Even though his scuffed shot lacked venom, Diego García's quick reaction allowed it to pass the goalkeeper, leaving Madrid temporarily reeling.

In the 41st minute, the southern Madrid underdog scored once more. This time, Rosier quickly dispossessed Brahim Díaz after pounced on a weak touch, then charged right through the center of the pitch. He threaded a flawless pass to Óscar Rodríguez, who selflessly lay it off for Dani Raba to tuck home, giving Leganés an unexpected lead as Madrid's defenders scrambled.

Leganés kept trying for a third, but he was unable to deliver the knockout blow. Ever the ruthless one, Madrid took advantage of the break to change the course of events.

In an instinctive move, Jude Bellingham hammered home a rebound to tie the score for Madrid. Then, in stunning manner, Mbappé finished his brace by curling a free kick just inside the post after it had drilled through a hole in the defensive wall. The goal followed a contentious foul call that infuriated the Leganés players, but Madrid wasted no time in taking advantage of the situation.

With just nine games left after the action over the weekend, Atletico Madrid's title chase took yet another setback as a 1-1 draw against Espanyol left them six points behind the league leaders. Every point that is lost feels more and more expensive as time is running out.

In the 38th minute, César Azpilicueta scored a spectacular volley to break the tie after a poor clearing landed just outside the box. In his first La Liga season, the 35-year-old veteran celebrated with a joyful goal—his first in Spain's top division.

Unwilling to let up, Espanyol increased the pressure following the interval. In the 71st minute, Javi Puado coolly tapped home from the penalty spot, proving their perseverance. Clément Lenglet, engaged in a frantic battle for position, hauled down Leandro Cabrera as he was defending a lofted cross in the area, creating the opportunity. Espanyol was sure to capitalize when the referee quickly indicated the location.

In January, Atletico dominated the league and appeared ready for a run at the championship under Diego Simeone. However, March has been a complete bust. Losses to Getafe and Barcelona, as well as a Champions League exit at the hands of Real Madrid, were followed by a disheartening stalemate at Espanyol. They have entirely lost their impetus.

Jan Oblak showed his annoyance openly. Atletico is currently looking for answers rather than glory after spending a lot of money in the summer to assemble what is undoubtedly Spain's deepest roster.

“Two more important points have gotten away from us. It is tough to understand why this is happening,” Oblak said. “We talked in January about how we needed to be consistent to compete for the title and we are not showing it. The teams behind us are closing and the teams at the top are getting away.”

With his 521st La Liga appearance, Antoine Griezmann broke Lionel Messi's record for the most games played by a foreign player. The French forward solidifies his legacy in Spanish football and attests to his endurance.
