Bluestocking Claims £2.5M Arc de Triomphe Victory: Ralph Beckett Calls It ‘Greatest-Ever Day’ as Rossa Ryan-Ridden Filly, Added Just Days Before

As Ralph Beckett’s filly Bluestocking one of the only two British runners this year performed a fairytale in the historical 103rd Qatar Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe the national anthem was played loud in the Bois de Boulogne. Though this resonance continued even beyond the summer Olympics in Paris.

Rossa Ryan helped consult Bluestocking who was supplemented only days before the race with £2.5m-plus prize money up for grabs. By making the best of her bottom draw she was able to maintain a consistent place among the top three in the competition never falling low. Ryan could successfully steer his horse around the course, only swerving from the rail to get past the leader going into the crucial part of the race. Ryan’s discussed contender is Aidan O’Brien’;s leading challenger, named Los Angeles.

Bluestocking drew out and was always in front with two furlongs left. The final three hundred yard can look very far for a leader on soft surface and going but this time, the eerie prospect of a horse coming to challenge her— as Westover did to Ace Impact here last season —did not happen.

A reprise of the Prix Vermeille millet finished with Bluestocking winning by a length and a quarter from Aventure which underlined the determination of the Lieutenant-Colonel’s filly. Overall, the Estrellas came out with a total score of 12 points, enough to place third over Los Angeles Team A, while Sosie, who was much anticipated to take home the grand prize, only got a total of 10 points that put her in fourth place.

This victory was the seventh for the Juddmonte silks in the history of the competition in honour of the late Khalid Abdullah. Also, Bluestocking joined the list of the previous fifteen years where filly or mare took the victory. However, Shin Emperor ranked the 12th position a little in front of Look De Vega failing again Japanese expectations after finishing the glory on French Derby in June.

Among the weighing room’s novice, the 024 years old from Galway, Ryan, establishing himself as a serious contender to future championships by riding to victory on 150 ponies in Ireland. Nevertheless, this accomplishment- his fourth of a Group One race remains a memorable one and he puts it down to the third one with this mare– the horse that defined his career to him. Evidently, this success can be considered as his major accomplishment throughout all the years of his work up to date.

“When I dissected the form, I was pretty confident but not confident enough to tell anyone. I’m just the lucky one to be on her,” he said. “The Vermeille won the Arc for us. That day I was drawn wide and had to go forward and we kept the same plan today. In the straight it was just get to the line.”

Young Ryan’s father, David, was an onetime jockey and a horse trainer and a paramedic who had a stint as a jockey for a jump trainer when he was still a teenager at Maisons-Laffitte. But this was a happy homecoming for him, his wife Deirdre, and their daughter Holly to Paris to cheer for their brilliant son.

“It’s unbelievable. I served my time in Maisons-Laffitte, just to be here on Arc day is an honour, to have your son win the race is something else.” “That’s a definite upgrade on pony racing,”  joked the man, reflecting on the sacrifices made along the way. The atmosphere was filled with excitement and pride, making it a truly memorable occasion for the family.
