Breanna Stewart Leads Liberty to 80-66 Win Over Lynx, Ties WNBA Finals at 1-1

Breanna Stewart Leads Liberty to 80-66 Win Over Lynx, Ties WNBA Finals at 1-1

Breanna Stewart was not going to let the past happen again. The two-time league MVP made sure that her New York Liberty team did not falter once more as the Minnesota Lynx came back again in the fourth quarter. He had a very good game on offense as he made sure that he was very aggressive on the offense so that he can help Stewart make sure that the game did not get away from them.

In the second game of the Finals, Stewart took the Liberty to an 80-66 victory by scoring 21 points and tying a WNBA record of seven steals. As in the first game, New York began the first half with a double-digit lead but watched it slip away. But they did not give in this time round. This was different from their previous downfall in that the Liberty was able tie the series at one. The third game in the series will be held in Minnesota on Wednesday night.

“The moment the game ended Thursday night I was looking forward to Sunday to change things, change the narrative a little bit,” Stewart said. “Be the same I was and be obviously better.”

After falling behind by nine points early in the fourth quarter, Minnesota rallied and with 3:40 remaining, a basket by Courtney Williams pegged the score 68-66. Yet, the Lynx will only score that few points because they were stifled the rest of the game.

New York took the last quarter 12-0 as he team buckled up on defense and converted on offense on its possession. Laney-Hamilton’s three pointer to start the final period was the turning point before Stewart’s put back lay up with 57 seconds left pushed the Liberty’s lead to 10 points. It was sweet revenge for Stewart after she missed a free throw that could have given New York the championship in Game 1.

With 20 points and clutch plays in crucial situations, Laney-Hamilton was unstoppable throughout. Despite missing more than a month due to a knee injury before to the Olympic break, she was a game changer on defense. Her influence on both ends of the floor has been enormous for the Liberty, even though she is still recovering her full form.

Along with the number of steals, Stewart also had eight rebounds and five assists.

“I wanted to make it difficult for all the players I was going against,” Stewart said.

With the win, New York avoided a severe 0–2 disadvantage and the requirement for an incredible comeback. Interestingly, in the end, every one of the 20 teams that had trailed 0-2 in a best-of-five WNBA Finals series lost the series.

With 16 points, Napheesa Collier led the Lynx, followed by Courtney Williams with 15.
