Caitlin Clark’s rookie season continued to wow the spectators, and the team set a historic performance in the game. Clark recorded a WNBA record-breaking 19 assist in Indiana Fever’s 101-93 defeat to Dallas Wings. But Clark did not stop there. She scored 24 points and grabbed six rebounds, thus becoming the first league player to score 20 points, five rebounds, and 15 assists.
Playmaking extraordinaire Clark had already reached her maximum of 13 assists, a feat she had achieved 4x. Still, Clark was too strong for the Wings, who are famous for their fast offense and slow defense at best. This set the stage for what would be a phenomenal, thrilling, and record-breaking performance by the end of the game.
Caitlin Clark sought to surpass Ticha Penicheiro’s rookie single-game record of 16 assists after she obliterating her previous record in the final moments of the fourth quarter. Courtney Vandersloot’s all-time single-game record eighteen assist seemed like a distant goal but Clark was getting close in no time.
Helped feed four consecutive baskets for the Fever in a climactic two-minute span in which she recorded her 19th assist. Kelsey Mitchell with 2 minutes on the clock making a three-point shot to tie the game at 88 all establishing the record of the game’s assist.
In the last few minutes of the game, Clark had opportunities to reach the magical 20 assists, but the Wings responded with a 13-5 run to take the lead. Despite the Fever’s loss, Clark showed tremendous court sense and playwriting prowess, a testament to her storied career.
In an ironic twist, Clark’s best ball pass of the evening did not even warrant a mention in the assist. There was a behind the back feed in the paint to Aliyah Boston for two free throws. The atmosphere of the game was electrifying, showed Clark’s ideas and creativity in the field.
On Wednesday, not only did Clark set a record for most assists in a single game, but also for single season for the Fever. All she required was 26 games to surpass the previous record of 201 assists set by Erica Wheeler. Currently, Clark has 213 assists for the season and is almost within striking distance of the official rookie record of 225 by Ticha Penicheiro set in 1998. Last season, Alyssa Thomas was holding the record of 316 assists in the single season.
If Clark continues to win at the same rate and avoids injuries she has the capability of breaking that record as well. She and the Fever do in fact have a bright future ahead of them due to her capacity to lead the game with such finesse and precision.
