Canelo Alvarez Overpowers Edgar Berlanga to Secure Unanimous Decision and Retain Super Middleweight Titles

Canelo Alvarez Overpowers Edgar Berlanga to Secure Unanimous Decision and Retain Super Middleweight Titles

Canelo Alvarez spent his Saturday night taking care of business, as he usually did on the weekends surrounding Mexican Independence Day. It was Edgar Berlanga's (unbeaten) turn this time.

In a unanimous decision, the unified super middleweight champion clearly outperformed Berlanga, demonstrating his superior talents (117-110, 118-109, 118-109). With this triumph, Alvarez has successfully defended his title for the fifth time in a row.

Unlike in past bouts where he needed time to gather steam, the heavily favored Canelo Álvarez established dominance right from the opening bell. Exhibiting a calm and measured approach, he controlled the first two rounds with ease. The turning point came in the third round, when Álvarez unleashed a devastating left hook that dropped Edgar Berlanga to the mat. Although Berlanga faced a torrent of relentless strikes thereafter, he displayed impressive fortitude by withstanding the barrage.

“I’m the best fighter in the world,’’ Álvarez's comment drew applause from the packed crowd at Las Vegas' T-Mobile Arena.

As the fight went on, Álvarez's performance only got better, while Berlanga's constant trash talk persisted. Even after making a number of mistakes—such as being flagged for a purposeful headbutt and tripping after missing a power shot—Berlanga persisted in his verbal attacks, trying to incite Álvarez throughout the game.

Ultimately, Berlanga's verbal barbs outweighed his hits. Both fighters gave each other a polite hug after the final bell rang, knowing full well that the outcome would probably be revealed.

Berlanga demonstrated promise despite losing. He was a significant underdog going into the ring because of his reputation, which was built on a run of early knockouts. Although Álvarez was obviously more skilled, Berlanga showed that he was ready for the big stage, which could help him in his upcoming matches.

"I could’ve did a lot more. But I was in there with a legend, man," Berlanga said.

In contrast, Álvarez hasn't won via knockout since defeating Caleb Plant in November 2021. This could raise possible questions regarding the 34-year-old champion's age-related decline in fighting prowess.
