Ferrari had a historic day in the US Grand Prix, as their drivers won an incredible 1-2 finish. It was a momentous day for the team as teammate Carlos Sainz finished second at Austin's Circuit of the Americas, where teammate Charles Leclerc won. Meanwhile, a penalty derailed Lando Norris's podium ambitions and severely hurt his chances of winning the championship for McLaren.
“I still expect McLaren to be in front, Red Bull to be very similar to them. And then us and Mercedes, depending on how good of a weekend we have, will be will be there,” Leclerc said afterwards.
“It wasn’t an easy weekend but I had the confidence in the race, We still had the upper hand, we couldn’t have dreamed for better.”
Norris had overtaken Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen in the final laps, but his move was deemed illegal for leaving the track and gaining an advantage. The five-second penalty handed to Norris pushed him from third to fourth, playing spoilsport for the Singapore GP winner's podium ambitions. This allowed Verstappen to claim third place, extending his championship lead to 57 points with only five races left, making the penalty one of the most debated moments of the race.
“It’s not an easy decision, it would’ve come sooner,” Norris said. “I tried, he also went off the track. If he goes off the track he goes in too hard and gains an advantage. But I don’t make the rules.”
“The one guy I need to beat is Max and that’s the guy I didn’t beat today. It was a non-successful weekend, all in all. But we gave it a good shot. I tried,” he added.
Lando Norris shot off the starting line with lightning speed, but he was driven wide by pandemonium at the first corner, giving Charles Leclerc the lead and Carlos Sainz the third position. Disappointed with the way things were going, Norris let the team radio know how he felt. A safety car was brought out after Lewis Hamilton's spin-off on lap two, which resulted in his early withdrawal from the race. This gave the race an unexpected turn.
Despite finishing a distant 18th place and failing to earn the bonus point, Esteban Ocon set the fastest lap of the race. With their impressive performance, Ferrari took center stage, although McLaren maintained their lead in the constructors' standings, increasing it to 40 points. The excitement in the race was palpable, with stunning overtakes and calculated errors raising the stakes at every turn.
The Mexican Grand Prix is scheduled for October 25–27 and will take place at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodríguez. This tripleheader is the next event on the Formula One schedule. Exhilarating action and racing at high altitudes are just around the corner, adding to the excitement!
