There were both highs and lows for MVP hopefuls in Week 5 of the NFL. Although the chances are slightly lower now – at +240, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is still considered the frontrunner for the dream trophy. Though there have been moments where Mahomes has brought out sporadic moments of genius, he is considered the wire-to-wire favorite due to his proven versatility to lead his team to victory, no matter how average his strictly statistical performance might be. Standing right behind him of course is C.J. Smith, a rookie quarterback for the Houston Texans. Stroud is positioned at +650 due to remarkable on-field captaincy and a seamless transition from college football to the NFL.
Lamar Jackson, the form-shifting quarterback of the Baltimore Ravens is also gaining at +650, and the same as Stroud, Jackson remains a high-octane, two-pronged weapon that can turn the tide of games using mere passing and running.
All three may seem obvious, but Buffalo Bills’ quarterback Josh Allen is still a strong contender for consideration by his capacity to take his team on high-powered scoring runs. He currently has +750 odds. Allen is always dangerous due for his physical power and prowess. With +1000 rating another player to focus on is Jayden Daniels who is a new signee to Washington Commanders team. It has been one of the closest MVP debate of the last so many years because of the fact that he is in the race as a first year player, which speaks volumes for his ability. As both these quarterbacks are getting into their comfort zones there might be more and more turns in the race as time passes.
Kansas City Chiefs have been receiving a lot of credit for their outstanding 5-0 performance under Patrick Mahomes, more so after their impressive win against the New Orleans Saints on Monday Night Football. This game also proved how Mahomes handles spreading the ball well as he comes in search of his third league MVP. He collected 331 passing yards, the most in a single game this season, whilst spreading the ball to eight different recipients. His importance in the offense is still undeniable, as he continues to take the Chiefs to victory in more frequent cases.
But as you can see by the stats, his season wasn’t without its challenges either despite the success achieved. While he has completed six touchdowns and six interceptions he has a QBR of 55.8, which places him 16th in the league and a long way from the elite level we have seen from him before. It would be the lowest QBR he would register for the entire season if the statement holds water. Kansas City’s record speaks for it self they are undefeated but their defense has been the best in the NFL standing at the sixth place and has only allowed an average of 17 points per game. This is half the reason for their success According to this formula one is almost certain of success.
Mahomes’ MVP case is how he has adapted to Kansas City’s change in fortunes – or lack thereof – in the receiving corps he enjoyed in his early years with the club, including the “Legion of Zoom”. Nevertheless, the Chiefs first loss might even decrease his chances of winning MVP because suddenly people will be more concerned about whether the team is going to win or not.
Lamar Jackson, the two time MVP, has emerged quickly in the MVP race this year after leading his team, the Ravens to their third consecutive win. The guy has raised his record to an incredible level of 9-1 all time against the AFC North teams and this has not stopped him from making a mockery of the Cincinnati Bengals. He was all over the field in their last game and performed 55 rush yards on the field in throw and four throw touchdowns added to the total of 348 throwing yards. It is this ability to play everywhere on the floor, create for teammates and make defenses significantly uncomfortable that cements his status as consider an MVP candidate.
C.J. Stroud, after struggling in week 3 against the Minnesota Vikings, has stepped up tremendously. He has since regained his form with consecutive 300 yard passing displays. Stroud guided Houston to a slim win over the Bills while missing his favourite target Nico Collins in the hamstrings and Houston’s rushing attack suffering from the absence of Joe Mixon. His capacity to lead the attack has helped him boost on chances on clinching the MVP due to pressure.
Patrick Mahomes seems to be cruising right now, even though the MVP race is still very much up for grabs. He has no scientific flash, and his statistics are not significantly above those of his peers. The competition is still wide open, so it’ll be best to wait for Mahomes’ stats to come closer to the other top contenders in this betting category.
