Djokovic Retires After First Set at Australian Open, Zverev Advances to First Final

The 37-year-old Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic was forced to retire after the first set in the Australian Open men’s singles semifinal, handing victory to Germany’s Alexander Zverev, who advances to his first-ever final in the tournament. The intense first set, which Zverev won in a tiebreak 7-6, saw both players delivering strong performances until Djokovic decided to withdraw due to physical issues.

Djokovic, who was heavily taped on his left leg, had been battling injuries throughout the tournament. His quarterfinal match against Carlos Alcaraz lasted over three hours, further straining his condition. During today’s semifinal, his movement appeared increasingly limited, prompting concerns among fans. Despite boos from the crowd as he retired, Djokovic responded with a thumbs-up gesture, signaling his acknowledgment.

Zverev expressed empathy for Djokovic during the post-match interview, asking the crowd not to boo injured players. “I understand you paid to see a five-set match, but Djokovic played through pain to reach this stage. Please show respect,” he urged.

Zverev will face either Italy’s world No. 1 Jannik Sinner or American Ben Shelton in the final. Having lost in two previous Grand Slam finals, Zverev is determined to secure his first major title this time.
