Djokovic Suffers Shocking Monte Carlo Exit After 'Horrible' Defeat to Tabilo

Djokovic Suffers Shocking Monte Carlo Exit After 'Horrible' Defeat to Tabilo

Following a surprising early exit from the Monte Carlo Masters on Wednesday, Novak Djokovic didn't hold back when he called his performance "horrible." Alejandro Tabilo from Chile defeated the world-famous Serb 6-3, 6-4 in straight sets, shocking the event.

For the first time since winning Olympic gold in Paris in July, Djokovic made his clay court comeback. He is still after his elusive 100th career victory. He appeared out of sync right away, though, as he struggled to build momentum, missed crucial shots, and never quite found his footing on the surface he used to dominate.

“This was horrible. I did not have high expectations, really. I knew I’m going to have a tough opponent and I knew I’m going to probably play pretty bad. But this bad, I didn’t expect.” Djokovic said.

He added: “I was hoping it was not going to happen, but it was quite a high probability I’m going to play this way. I don’t know. Just horrible. A horrible feeling to play this way, and just sorry for all the people that have to witness this.”

Novak Djokovic lost again, this time on clay, after suffering an unexpected loss to unseeded teenager Jakub Menšík in the Miami Open final. On the surface, he made 29 unforced mistakes against just 18 winners, a costly imbalance that ended his 10-match winning streak quickly.

The performance represented yet another unusual slip-up from a player who has long been renowned for his accuracy and mental toughness. During a season that has become more volatile, Djokovic has been hunting for answers as the steadiness that previously underpinned his clay-court domination seemed to dissolve.

Alejandro Tabilo's perfect head-to-head record against the 24-time Grand Slam champion currently stands at 2-0 after he upset Novak Djokovic twice, both in straight sets. With this second upset, his initial victory—which was unlikely but unforgettable—at the Italian Open in May 2024 remains the sole top-10 triumphs of his career.

The circumstances surrounding his most recent victory are even more astounding. Carrying the burden of an eight-match losing skid on the surface, Tabilo had a miserable 2-9 record going into Monte Carlo in 2025 and had lost all of his clay matches. Effort? There was none for him. Faith? That is a different matter.

The Chilean, who is currently ranked No. 32 in the world, will play Grigor Dimitrov, the 15th seed, in the third round on Thursday. This clash has far more excitement now than anyone could have anticipated a week ago.

“I served well today, which helped me to regroup my game after that first game, and it was an unreal match, I think. Match by match I’ve been getting better, and I’m so happy,”  Tabilo said,  “It’s been a tough year, so a little bit of the nerves were there, but I just tried to remember what I did well against him last time.”
