The Los Angeles Dodgers secured their place in the National League Championship Series with a 2-0 victory over the San Diego Padres, highlighted by a stellar performance from Japanese pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
On October 12 Japan Time, the Los Angeles Dodgers faced off against the San Diego Padres in Game 5 of the MLB postseason National League Division Series at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. The Dodgers triumphed with a 2-0 victory, earning their spot in the National League Championship Series.
Despite Shohei Ohtani's hitless performance, going 0-for-4, Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto delivered an impressive outing, pitching five scoreless innings with two hits allowed and two strikeouts. The Dodgers took the lead in the second inning with a solo home run from Enrique Hernández and added an important insurance run in the seventh with another solo shot, this time from Teoscar Hernández.
On the other side, Yu Darvish of the Padres pitched well, throwing 6.2 innings while allowing two runs on three hits, but he received little support from the offense. Fellow pitcher Yuki Matsui remained on the bench and did not get a chance to pitch. With this loss, the Padres were eliminated from the postseason.
This game marked a historic moment in MLB history, as it was the first time two Japanese pitchers, Yamamoto and Darvish, started simultaneously in a playoff game. The victorious Dodgers now move on to face the New York Mets in the NLCS, with Game 1 scheduled to take place at Dodger Stadium on October 14.
