Dodgers Manager Doubts World Series Run If Shohei Ohtani’s Performance Struggles

Dodgers Manager Doubts World Series Run If Shohei Ohtani’s Performance Struggles

As the Los Angeles Dodgers prepare for the next NLCS, manager Dave Roberts spoke about Shohei Ohtani's recent slump in the NLDS, which is unusual for a guy who is sometimes referred to as baseball's most complete talent.

Considered by many to be the face of contemporary baseball, Ohtani had yet another outstanding regular season. He once again shown his unrivaled dual-threat abilities by shattering records, making headlines, and triumphantly returning to the mound. But by October, that brightness had faded.

Ohtani only got one hit in 18 at-bats during the Dodgers' game against the Phillies, while also driving in one run and collecting two walks. He finished the series with a.056 average, which is unusual for a player who is known for pushing the boundaries of what is possible at the plate, having struck out nine times.

Roberts didn't hold back. He underlined that Ohtani needs to find his rhythm in the batter's box again if the Dodgers are to have a realistic chance of winning the World Series. Roberts said, "We go as he goes," highlighting the indisputable fact that the entire Dodgers lineup follows when Ohtani lights up.

Shohei Ohtani had an uphill battle from the beginning of the series against the Phillies, to be fair. His typical domination at the plate was largely neutralized by Philadelphia's arsenal of left-handed arms, both in the rotation and out of the bullpen.

The Japanese superstar was always off balance due to pitchers like Jesús Luzardo, Ranger Suárez, and Cristopher Sánchez, who took full advantage of the matchups. Ohtani had fewer chances to drive the ball with force because of their accuracy and diversity in breaking balls, which drove him into awkward counts.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts acknowledged the challenge but also called for growth. “Whoever we face in the NLCS, they’ll likely load up on lefties again,” Roberts said. “We just hope Shohei takes a moment to reflect on that last series — how often he chased outside the zone, how passive he became inside it. The quality of his at-bats simply has to improve.”

It wasn’t a criticism so much as a challenge — one aimed at a generational player capable of adjusting, adapting, and reclaiming his power when the stakes are highest.
