Dricus du Plessis Clings to Middleweight Title with Stunning 4th-Round Submission of Israel Adesanya at UFC 305

Dricus du Plessis Clings to Middleweight Title with Stunning 4th-Round Submission of Israel Adesanya at UFC 305

The fight night was held in Perth at the RAC Arena, as UFC 305 marked the MMA giants’ debut in Australia. The actual fights in Western Australia were staged on the Sunday morning while those aired in America happened in the Saturday night.

Due to the packed bill of talented Australians on stage, the viewers were glued to their seats owing to the thrilling performance. The former champion Israel Adesanya challenged the Middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis in the long-awaited main fight. This brings me to the climax of the fight where Adesanya tried to reclaim his title with the fans fully behind him.

Although Dricus du Plessis seemed to be exhausted and close to a nervous breakdown, he looks like a real champion now.

In UFC 305, the current middleweight title holder continued his reign by Illustrating that Adesanya is not even close to his level as he beat him in the fourth round by submission. Although the fight was really in Adesanya’s favor, Du Plessis did some turn around and clinched his first title fight defence and the triumph proved that undoubtedly he was the boss in the octagon.

The bout was particularly leveled with both boxers taking turns to either land their punches or deliver accurate combinations. This battle was intensely fought; there were massive exchanges between both forces. In a blink of an eye, Du Plessis turned the entire game around.

He knocked out the former champion with a very powerful left hook that landed on the head of Adesanya. Du Plessis then retaliated with three correct right hooks Du Plessis then retaliated with three right hooks. Because of this bombardment Adesanya was made vulnerable and Du Plessis was able to drag him to the canvas. Once there, he was able to lock in a rear-naked choke with skill. In the fourth round the fight went to the fourth round 10 minutes and 38 seconds into the round Adesanya could no longer move and tapped out therefore giving Du Plessis the submission win.

"I just made a stupid, dumb mistake on the ground," Adesanya said after the fight. “I always knew if I’m in trouble fighting one of the, if not the best strikers ever in this division, I need that takedown.”

“This man is the king of getting back up. No one can take him down and keep him there.”

After a lot of preposteration from the crowd in Perth Australia Du Plessis was finally able to get his arm into position and make Adesanya tap out through rear-naked choke leaving his record in UFC unbeaten.

It was a harsh and painful blow for Adesanya which was a major setback in his fight. His aim was to have the third reign in the UFC championship, in and out of the cage, look to join Randy Couture as the only man to have had three reigns at the title. The stand-up game looked to be at its finest throughout the fight for Adesanya, reminding of his previous performances. It was evident that he was trying to manipulate most of these exchanges in a way that indicated that he was very capable of winning either by a decision or through stoppage due to the impacts made from the body shots. But fate had different plans.

Adesanya has no clear path towards another crack at the belt in the near future. After the fight there was some verbal exchange in the Octagon where Adesanya jokingly said that he was thinking of retiring but quickly dismissed it saying, ‘I’m not f***ing leaving.’

Meanwhile, Du Plessis has risen to new levels of success after knocking out Adesanya, Sean Strickland, and Robert Whittaker in consecutive bouts. Nevertheless, it does seem quite possible that he will face one of these past champions in the future. On the other hand, he might encounter the last champion; this would also make the fight interesting.

The fighter who was the previous champion, after the back-to-back losses, admitted frankly that he did not know what would happen to him next. He appeared apprehensive as he contemplated his tactics. However, as has become customary when facing defeat, he surrendered to the crowd and playfully imitated the movie ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ in a defiant tone, telling everyone he has no intentions of vanishing.
