Dricus du Plessis Defeats Sean Strickland by Unanimous Decision to Retain Middleweight Title at UFC 312

Dricus du Plessis Defeats Sean Strickland by Unanimous Decision to Retain Middleweight Title at UFC 312

During a brutal fight at Sydney Dricus du Plessis obtained victory over his toughest rival Sean Strickland to recover his UFC middleweight title. The South African boxer proved his control of the 185-pound weight class by inflicting severe injuries to Strickland that broke his nose.

All three judges awarded du Plessis victory by giving him scores of 50-45, 50-45 and 49-46. His victory against Sean Strickland advanced his winning streak to 23-2 thus establishing himself as the toughest fighter in the division.

Du Plessis won the middleweight title in Toronto through split decision against Strickland in January until the American fighter protested against the close result. The pair had agreed to a rematch after the champion defended his title against Israel Adesanya in August then Strickland earned a win by decision against Brazilian fighter Paulo Costa.

“To come in here and try to knock this man out is next to impossible,” said du Plessis, the first South African to win a UFC championship. “I’d love another round, but that’s not the game, “I wanted a submission, a knockout or an absolute domination of a five-rounder,” he added. “That’s what I gave. I gave it my all.”

The Toronto fight was a close battle for Dricus du Plessis who successfully claimed victory with no mistakes in Sydney. It was all him this time. In the first-round Strickland adopted a conservative jabbing technique and implemented his characteristic head kicks successfully four times.

As time went by in the fight Du Plessis began bringing more power to each exchange. The South African fighter established the fight rhythm during round two while inflicting cuts on Strickland through his precise face attacks. Strickland showed a casual attitude in round four which du Plessis skillfully exploited by capitalizing on it. The title bout evolved into his full dominance when he intensified his full-on aggressiveness along with frame control.

A powerful right punch slammed into Strickland producing massive blood flow from his nose which sent him stumbling into the cage in the following minute after another destructive hit.

The injury limited Strickland's performance negatively causing him to lose his composure as du Plessis intensified his attacks during the closing round while concentrating on his medical condition. Although he missed his opportunity for a knockout the South African managed to guide the fight until its completion.

After the fight Strickland accepted the obvious fact by using profanities in a court interview where he admitted his broken nose.

“I popped it back in place and kept fighting for you,” he said. “He kicked my a** fair and square, props to him.”

Du Plessis continues to prove his place among the best fighters after securing nine consecutive victories. At present Du Plessis trails behind only Israel Adesanya and Anderson Silva for longest winning streaks in the 185-pound weight class history.
