Floyd Mayweather’s Exhibition Rematch in Mexico Ends with Referee Controversy as He Goes the Distance Against John Gotti III

Floyd Mayweather’s Exhibition Rematch in Mexico Ends with Referee Controversy as He Goes the Distance Against John Gotti III

In an exhibition bout last Saturday night in Mexico City, former world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. returned to the ring and went the distance for eight rounds against the son of the alleged crime boss John Gotti III. Mayweather, 47, demonstrated his defensive skills in a no-decision fight staged at the Arena Ciudad de Mexico.

Despite having been hyped for one outstanding match between Mayweather and Gotti ,the match turned out to be lacking the added extras that may have been expected. Contrary to the fans’ expectations, it was more of Mayweather’s masterclass in tactical PvP. One of the better displays of Mayweather’s skills and precision a boxing match can offer, the fight did not feature knockdowns, wonderful slips or big punches one would have expected from a Mayweather fight to the excitement of fans.

Although it is worth noting that since the fight was an exhibition, it had no decision, but it was clear who was the winner. Despite John Gotti III being 37 years old and apparently trained in handling weapons and fighting, Mayweather, aged 47 years old, was way beyond his league as he clearly lacked the talent and experience as Mayweather. Though Mayweather never dazzled with bone crunching power punches, he displayed accuracy and consistency in delivering them. Even though Gotti tried to make a stand, Mayweather was already dominating the fight through technicality.

Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. was present as a member of the broadcast team, and Mayweather said he was impressed with him. “Mexico City, I love you guys. Thanks for coming out.’’

In their first fight in June 2023, just every time the two fighters touch each other a lot and engage in verbals, the fight was brought to the sixth round due to the continuous grappling and posturing. Gotti ignored the decision of the referee and attacked Mayweather, punching him. Forcing the match to come to a climax, fighters from both sides stormed into the ring and engaged in a heated fight.

It was a tense fight throughout Saturday. When the rounds extended past two minutes, Gotti looked noticeably annoyed, and Mayweather boiled over when the referee threatened to deduct points for striking Gotti at the back of the head. Physical hostility towards each other was evident within the ring as the situation got worse to a point that a substitute referee had to be called in.

But the fight was fairly calm—possibly more so than the crowd expected—and ended with a loving hug between Mayweather and Gotti. "He's my guy," Mayweather said of Gotti, with his arm around his opponent. "But we had to put on a show for the people. And I want to thank Gotti for being a man of his word and we ran it back twice.''

When Panamanian referee, Hector Afu charged Floyd Mayweather $100 for a blow that was deemed to have landed on the back of the head in the 2nd round, the complexion of the fight changed. As a consequence of the verdict, Mayweather briefly argued with the boxer for a few minutes.

Given his past transgressions, Mayweather, who appeared visibly angered by the call, requested for a different set of referee. The Mexican referee Alfredo Uruzquieta was thus appointed to replace Afu when his demand was immediately granted. According to this twist of events, this change of leadership was a turning point in the fight and enabled the match to go ahead.

Social media was swiftly used by fans to discuss the strange incident. One person wrote: “Mayweather really fired the ref mid-fight. He is made of money.”
