In the final circuits of the Austrian GP race, amazing incidents occurred between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris before George Russell took the trophy. Verstappen and Norris having been duelling for the lead position, they crashed into each other with seven laps remaining. The British driver complained about the fellow Red Bull competitor that the latter has been racing in the ‘unsafe’ manner during the race.
During the duel for the first position on lap 64 out of 71, Norris made an attempt to overtake Verstappen’s Red Bull but both cars were severely damaged. Verstappen was able to spin back to the pits and cross the finishing line, while Norris had to park his car due to the injury he sustained. This change of events was enough for Russell to enable him to win.
Referees, in turn, set a 10-second penalty for Verstappen due to his involvement in the incident. Just how critical this moment was in determining the final outcome of the Grand Prix can be seen from the fact that George Russell, who was trailing by only 15 seconds in third place, was able to take the lead. Thus, using this opportunity, the British driver scored his second victory on the track for the current season.
“They (Verstappen and Norris) were going for it,” said Russell. “I knew it [the collision] was a possibility. You are always dreaming and you have got to be there to pick up the pieces.”
Verstappen was informed of his 10-second penalty and replied: “That is just ridiculous.”
Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz ended up in the third position but McLaren’s Oscar Piastri surged ahead for the second place. Verstappen had come down to fifth place due to his penalty while Hamilton finished the race in the fourth position.
Having established a good ground in the Sunday’s main event, Verstappen looked determined for a record eighth consecutive victory in 11 rounds after converting his pole position into a sprint win on Saturday. However, the race shifted significantly from what was anticipated when there were twenty laps left on the track. Verstappen’s lead reached up to seven seconds but Norris was able to cut this down through Red Bull’s mistake during the pit stop where they failed to change Verstappen’s left rear tire.
Once again, Verstappen was up against another drama where he went off the track at Turn 4 during his out-lap, making Norris to get closer to him within DRS Zone. On lap 55 Norris tried to overtake on grunt Turn 3 but Verstappen was undaunted. The first overtaking happened at the third lap, when Norris attempted to overtake Verstappen by braking at the third corner, however, Verstappen was able to shut the door again at the following corner.
“He reacted to my move and you are not allowed to do that,” protested Norris over the radio. “He cannot keep moving after I move,” said the Englishman. “It is just dangerous. We will have a big shunt.” “He has to give the position back,” said Norris. “I was ahead on the apex.”
Increasingly irritated, Norris attempted a third time to pass Verstappen with eight circuits remaining. When he returned to the track, Verstappen had maintained his lead despite his hard defense, running wide at the third corner.
Accusing Norris of pushing him off course, Verstappen objected over the radio. Verstappen said that "he divebombed me." "That's not how you should overtake."
Another interesting accident occurred at turn 3 when Norris gt collided with Verstappen again such an impressive rise in tension.
While Norris lost his chance to fight for the race win because of the flat tire, Verstappen also spun and had to rejoined the track in a fifth place due to the left rear puncture. This largely reflected Verstappen’s driving behavior during the event which saw him given a 10-second penalty.
Nevertheless, Russell capitalised on blunders by the two frontrunners and won the race which brought the maiden victory for Mercedes in the 2023 season after the last success at the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix.
