Heartfelt Triumph: Mr Brightside Conquers Group 1 CF Orr Stakes, Overcoming Tough Competition from Pride Of Jenni

Heartfelt Triumph: Mr Brightside Conquers Group 1 CF Orr Stakes, Overcoming Tough Competition from Pride Of Jenni

The CF Orr Stakes exemplified the essence of Group 1 racing, setting a standard for the sport. The intense competition left no room for evasion, as a rapid tempo imposed a demanding challenge. Participants faced a rigorous test, prompting them to confront the crucial question of which contender would display the utmost determination in the final 200 meters.

Mr. Brightside took center stage. However, as the race unfolded down the straight, it appeared that the $1.95 favorite confronted a challenge that seemed slightly beyond his reach, especially considering the early stage of his autumn campaign. The training efforts of Ben, JD, and Will Hayes ensured that Mr. Brightside was in optimal condition for his first race of the season, yet they also wisely preserved room for improvement in the performance of the multiple Group 1 winner. Ultimately, it was the sheer determination and heart of Mr. Brightside that propelled him across the finish line, showcasing the resilience and spirit that make him a standout competitor.

The daring frontrunner, Pride Of Jenni, known for injecting a true sense of pace into Group 1 races in her recent three outings, presented a formidable challenge up front for jockey Declan Bates. Despite the impressive effort from Pride Of Jenni, it was Mr. Brightside who demonstrated a remarkable surge of energy in the final 50 meters, clinching his fifth Group 1 victory. In this thrilling contest, the seasoned frontrunner set a bold tempo, but Mr. Brightside's late surge proved decisive in securing the coveted win.

“It worked out perfect with the pace on and Pride Of Jenni was so brave there but I was glad that he got there late and so much improvement in him to come, hopefully it’s the start of a big autumn,” JD Hayes said.

Pride Of Jenni presented a formidable challenge to Mr. Brightside, demanding an impressive performance to secure the victory. In their intense duel, Mr. Brightside ran the second-fastest CF Orr Stakes since Lonhro's triumph in the 2004 edition of the race. Pride Of Jenni's relentless pace forced Mr. Brightside to elevate his performance, ultimately contributing to a noteworthy achievement in the context of CF Orr Stakes history.

Despite a delayed start, Mr. Brightside clocked an impressive time of 1:22.27 for the 1400m distance. Jockey Craig Williams expressed his minimal concern, noting that his worry only surfaced when the six-year-old had to initiate the chase early in the race due to the relentless pressure applied by Pride Of Jenni in the lead. Even with this challenging situation, Mr. Brightside showcased remarkable speed and resilience, delivering a noteworthy performance in the face of adversity.

“I think he just summed up my approach to riding a horse as good as he is, that part was never a worry, it was only when we came under pressure and he wasn’t travelling I went, ‘oh wow’,” Williams said.

“It was a brutal tactic by the second or third horse and it nearly got us all out of our comfort zone. But he’s just got a great tenacity, a great will to win.”

Bates observed that Pride Of Jenni began to experience the effects of applying early pressure as they entered the straight. Despite this, he was impressed by the resilience displayed by the Ciaron Maher-trained mare, particularly considering it was her first race since November of the previous year. The jockey marveled at Pride Of Jenni's ability to continue finding reserves of energy and determination throughout the race, showcasing her commendable endurance and racing spirit.

“I think top of the straight I thought she was going to start to tire a bit but she’s just so tough and has such an engine she can put out more,” Bates said.

Both Mr. Brightside and Pride Of Jenni had already secured invitations to the All-Star Mile. However, the third-place finisher, Buffalo River, secured a spot in next month's prestigious race through a commendable performance, guided skillfully by jockey Celine Gaudray. Despite strong competition, Buffalo River's determined effort earned him a well-deserved opportunity to participate in the upcoming lucrative event.

Veight, the winner of the Australia Stakes, displayed resilience by putting up a strong fight to secure a commendable fourth-place finish in his inaugural attempt at Group 1 level against more experienced competitors. Despite the heightened competition, Veight showcased notable determination and performance, marking a promising foray into the elite echelons of horse racing.

He just peaked on his run at the 150 (metres) and obviously Mr Brightside was too good for all of us late,” Veight’s jockey Damian Lane said.

“I thought it was a really good run for his first go in that company.”
