Hifumi Abe Defends Olympic Judo Title; Uzbekistan Clinches First Gold

Hifumi Abe Defends Olympic Judo Title; Uzbekistan Clinches First Gold

The men’s under 66kg division was clinched by Hifumi Abe of Japan, who showed that he is a force to reckon with in the game of judo. In the classification on Sunday in the women’s under 52kg division, Abe’s sister was defeated by Diyora Keldiyorova of Uzbekistan who became the first athlete of her country to achieve a gold medal in judo.

In the final, Abe fought with Willian Lima from Brazil. It was not a walk in the park that Abe had to endure a lot of struggle before coming out victorious. He began his celebration by holding the two Olympic gold medals above his head using a two-fingered gesture of triumph. The first among them took place at the Olympics in Tokyo, which were held in empty facilities due to the COVID-19 outbreak, offering a heartfelt backdrop to his triumph.

The victory of Keldiyorova was similar to the above, as well as the other victories of the team. During the event, the hard working lady encountered strong rivals and, finally, became a winner and received the first Olympic judo award for Uzbekistan. The win also became an interesting addition to the day and was truly a great achievement for her country.

Abe stated that he intends to return in 2028 to defend the title in Los Angeles, "I had never seen that view, of the venue filled with people. And here I had my whole family watching,"

Lima thought that Abe should not have received the ippon since he was off his normal self due to missing out on the gold. On the other hand, Keldiyorova withdrew Uta Abe in the round of 16 while ending the unbeaten streak of the latter which began in 2019. So, it became possible for Keldiyorova to move to the finals.

Surprisingly vanquished by such a sudden reverse, Uta Abe, who become a champion two days before her brother in Tokyo, knelt on the floor and put her head in her hands.

"Tomorrow I will know what I did today," he said. "You have this chance only one or two times in your career, and you have to grab that medal. And today I couldn't."

In the 26-year-old Keldiyorova’s fight, she was able to score a point in the first period against Distria Krasniqi of Kosovo and sustained the lead to claim her first international title. She had also clinched two silver and a bronze in prior world championships.

Passion intensified in the final bout of the day, particularly when Brazilian Larissa Pimenta and her teammate Amandine Buchard clinched bronze in the women’s category, having lost to Abe in Tokyo previously, where they settled for silver. Following the enthusiastic reception of a dedicated home audience, Buchard triumphed in placing France third for judo at the Paris Games. In the Champ-de-Mars Arena stands, the friends and relatives joyfully embraced the twice the European champion.

Pimenta, who was defeated with Abe in Tokyo for three years, won the Olympic medal for the first time by defeating Odette Giuffrida. This Italian congratulated her before she fell sobbing on the mat.

Kazakhstani wrestler Gusman Kyrgyzbayev and Moldovan freestyle wrestler Denis Vieru claimed a bronze in the men’s event.
