The NBA has called off Friday’s preseason game between the Magic and the New Orleans Pelicans, which is to be held in Orlando because of escalating concerns over Hurricane Milton and its potential impact in the state of Florida. The league announced that no such change of date would be allowed and the match would have to take place.
Following their Wednesday game in San Antonio, the Magic were ticketed to head back to central Florida on Thursday. These plans are now in risk however, since the hurricane is likely to make a ground just in proximity to Siesta Key in the evening. Due to Hurricane Milton’s trajectory, the crew has had to change their travel plan because the storm will bring several inches of rain and wind of more than 100 mph in some parts of the state.
“Knowing that there’s families and homes and situations that are going through a tough time right now, we need to be mindful of that and conscious of it.” Magic coach Jamahl Mosley said, “There’s always things bigger than the game of basketball and that’s what we have to keep our perspective on.”
The Tampa Bay Rays' home field, Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, seems to sustain significant damage during Hurricane Milton's passage over the region. On Wednesday night, television images showed the storm tearing apart and tearing the fabric roof of the stadium to tears. It is unclear whether the stadium's inside was impacted, although the roof's obvious damage was evident.
Tropicana Field was not designated an official shelter, but as per the report by Tampa Bay Times, the workers who were hired to deal with aftermath of the storm were using this facility. They are located at a site that was developed for $138 million and the stadium was established in the year 1990. For many years, this product has turned out to be a long-standing solution. Although, as the stadium is nearing its expiration date for functionality, a new $1.3 billion ballpark will be built in its place for the 2026 season validating the prior storm damage even further.
Milton has now disrupted two NBA preseason games, the first one being between the Magic and the Pelicans. As a result of storm’s potential, Heat and Atlanta Hawks game which was supposed to be played Thursday in Miami has been moved to October 16. The Tampa Bay Lightning and Nashville Predators have a preseason game scheduled for Friday in Tampa The game was scheduled before this week was postponed meaning the NHL is also affected.
This game was supposed to be played last month but it had to be shifted to date due to Hurricane Helene. The storm threats remain so severe that the sports activities are still heavily disrupted, meaning schedules are changed frequently from part of the teams and the fans.
