Jake Paul’s application to have the defamation lawsuit against him thrown out by a judge in New York was rejected, which means that the fight with Matchroom Boxing will presumably continue. The case stems from allegations that Paul insulted the promoter during the 2022 clash between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano.
September 30, 2009, U.S. Paul’s motion to dismiss the lawsuit was rejected by the District Judge Paul Gardephe. The matter has been inactive for more than two years. Paul stated that the court cannot hear the case concerning him and that the present lawsuit should be dismissed for the reason of his Puerto Rican domicile. He further said that Matchroom Boxing was not licensed to stage fights in New York and was therefore an unlawful entity. But these defenses were dismissed by the judge who gave green light to the case, clearing the way for what could be a final battle in his court.
The judge squashed nod to dismiss the case on all the grounds that was laid down by Paul’s legal team.
Based on that decision, the judge has set the date for pre-suit conference for October 16 in the course of the matter. Not later than one week before the meeting both parties shall enclose a joint cover-letter containing a brief background of the matter, facts forming the basis of the claim or defense as well as motions and any references to settlement discussions.
Whereas the pre-trial meeting is to be attended by lawyers who are retained by both Matchroom Boxing and Paul, albeit Eddie Hearn the founder of Matchroom is not expected to be in attendance. This is another important stage of the legal battle as both sides prepare to escalate the fight in a courtroom.
The lawsuit stemmed from Jake Paul daring to assert that Matchroom Boxing had bribed judge Glenn Feldman to rig two major fights. Paul’s comments even hinted at foul play and finally condemned Feldman’s decisions when it came to the fights between Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua, as well as Amanda Serrano and Katie Taylor.
These accusation led to a legal battle, Matchroom responded by pointing to Paul of airing false and malicious allegations in a defamation suit that he had fired on behalf of the company in order to defend itself. Since then the case aggravated and became much worse, increasing the gap between professional boxing and social media influencer.
The next date for another hearing is on October 16, before a trial date becomes a fixed one.
However, for Jake Paul it is already the middle of training camp preparing for the fight which is scheduled for Friday November the 15th, 2024 at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas against Mike Tyson. An interesting aspect of the match is the super lightweight title rematch between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano which the event will air on Netflix. Two content producers will fight in Influencers bout Neeraj Goyat and Whindersson Nunes.
