Japan Clinches Men's Team Gold in Dramatic Finish, Defeating China in Gymnastics

The Japanese men’s gymnastics team was victorious in an exciting performance that had many of the spectators rising from their seats. Japan delivered a sensational moment as they clinched the men’s team event at the Paris Olympics on Monday leaving the Chinese on the brink of ending their 12-year wait for a title.

Japan pulled ahead of their opponents by more than three points before the final rotation. In Su Weide’s case, two costly mistakes from the horizontal bar upset China’s top performers while on his part, Xiao Ruoteng failed to deliver due to pressure. Japan won this event by a mere 0. 532 points thereby winning the last gold in a dramatic finish.

It was also increasing because earlier in the evening, Su erred in his vault landing. After the terrible defeat of the team, he stepped forward and said that he was to blame for the loss of the match to a great extent.

“Today taught me a big lesson,” Su said. “It’s a big regret. I feel sorry for my senior partners in the team. They have worked very hard in this cycle, there were a lot of injuries in the buildup, and because of my errors today, we lost the gold medal.”

The United States won a bronze medal in team competition behind the impressive performances of the two leading gymnastics teams with Russia not competing.

China has demonstrated their superiority over the current world champions Japan in the qualifying rounds. In the first round for the floor exercise, the two teams were in the same group. China maintained a steady performance on all the apparatuses and surged ahead in the middle of the competition even though Su showed some lapse on the vault.

Zhang Boheng performed exceptionally well in the last round, scoring a noteworthy 15.100 on the parallel bars, while colleague Zou Jingyuan exceeded expectations with a remarkable 16.000.

Despite these impressive shows, the Japanese did not lose their confidence that they can still make a comeback. By the moment, Takaaki Sugino, Shinnosuke Oka, and all-around champion of Tokyo Olympics Daiki Hashimoto took the opportunity that Su made mistakes and began stunning horizontal bar performances.

This win gave Japan its eighth gold in team events and also its first in this category since Rio 2016 Olympics. The fans shouted ‘USA’ and held American flags when the men’s gymnastics team from the United States scored a five-place qualifying, after 16 years of waiting for a medal.

Slightly short of Britain’s 822, the Americans settled for the bronze with total medals tally of 793. Frederick Richard and Brody Malone were great as always; however, every team member gave a significant effort. They went on a merry getting higher scores as they included pommel horse specialist Stephen Nedoroscik in the last turn. The winner in Tokyo Games Russia was missing, and this was due to the fact that they had been banned from participating due to the situation in Ukraine.

While performing his pommel horse routine in the middle of the event, Daiki Hashimoto who during the qualifications hinted at discomfort in his right shoulder, staggered. As much as the last one was better, he seemed unhappy as he dismounted and immediately hid his face in his hands as if annoyed. This greatly impacted the odds of Japan to win the gold as he performed so poorly.

“Even though there were some errors in our routines, we kept on motivating each other,” Hashimoto said. “I used the passion of my teammates on my final routine on the high bar.”

The only chance Zhang had of putting China back in control after Hashimoto’s move was that his score was inadequate.

“In the last part we did not perform as well as we should have. We end with a silver medal, we are indeed frustrated,” Zhang said.
