Japan secured a convincing 5-0 victory over Bahrain on Tuesday, marking their second win in the final round of the Asian qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. This follows their impressive 7-0 win against China in their opening match. The Samurai Blue, ranked 18th, maintained their perfect start with a dominant performance against the 80th-ranked Bahrain at Bahrain National Stadium.
Ayase Ueda and Hidemasa Morita were standout performers, each scoring twice, while Koki Ogawa added the final goal. Japan's coach, Hajime Moriyasu, praised the team’s preparation and execution, noting that despite the large scoreline, they had anticipated a tougher match.
Japan's dominance was clear from the start. Ritsu Doan nearly scored early on, hitting the post from a cross by Kaoru Mitoma. Bahrain’s Komail Al Aswad had a header saved by Japan's goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, but the hosts struggled to keep up with Japan's attacking play.
Japan was awarded a penalty in the 37th minute after a handball in the Bahrain box. Ueda, despite being distracted by a laser pointer, confidently converted the penalty.
In the second half, Junya Ito made an immediate impact as a substitute, setting up Ueda for his second goal. Ueda then assisted Morita for his first goal in the 61st minute, and Morita added another shortly after. Ogawa completed the scoring with a header from a rebound in the 81st minute.
Japan’s efficient performance was notable given the challenging conditions of playing away and under intense heat. Morita highlighted the team’s improved dynamic play in the second half.
In other Group C matches, Saudi Arabia, despite being reduced to 10 men, achieved a 2-1 comeback victory over China, and Australia drew 0-0 with Indonesia.
