Japan Seeks Record Medal Count at Paris Paralympics, Eyeing to Surpass 52 Medals from 2004

Japan Seeks Record Medal Count at Paris Paralympics, Eyeing to Surpass 52 Medals from 2004

This Wednesday marks the start of the Paralympics in Paris, and now Japan is planning on increasing the number of the medals earned in Athens 2004, thus breaking the record. This effort is spearheaded by the 18-year-old wheelchair tennis star Tokito Oda. Currently ranked No.. 2, Oda is a four-time Grand Slam singles champion and a legitimate contender for gold; he is prepared to establish his dominance in the world arena.

Japan’s athletes clinched thirteen gold medals during the Paralympics held in Tokyo in 2021. Now that the wheelchair tennis legend Shingo Kunieda has now retired, attention is on the younger talent. 10 are preparing for Paris as the top athletes of a country that demands more victories on the Olympic fields.

Naohide Yamaguchi, a swimmer with an intellectual disability, is one of the strongest competitors in the 100m breaststroke event. Another person of interest is Sarina Satomi who is contesting in the women’s wheelchair badminton singles. Each is believed to be the favorite to triumph its respective event.

53-year-old paracyclist Keiko Sugiura, who won two golds in Tokyo, now has five golds and 7 overall, and says ‘I want more’. She wants to demonstrate that age is not a hindrance and surpass her records by not only bringing home more golds but also keep on being the oldest Japanese Paralympic gold medallist.

Tomoki Sato is a wheelchair racer who performed exceptionally well in Tokyo where he bagged two gold medals and is eyeing for more in the Paris edition, particularly in the men’s T52 400m race. Sato is interested in victory, and he seeks to add on to his triumphs in Paralympic contests by defending the title.

Japan has provided the strongest team it has ever provided for an international Paralympic Games with 175 competitors. These participants will feature in what will be arguably a very historic Paralympics where approximately 4,400 athletes from 168 different nationalities will be participating. Russia is to be banned from the Games, and Belarus is also to be banned as its accomplice. However, 96 athletes from these countries as neutrals are allowed to participate.

The Paralympics which will continue until September 8 has a total of 549 medal events and these are spread across 22 different sports.

As Paris readies for its premier Paralympics, this is what the organizers are boasting of, an incredible opening ceremony. This grand and historic event will come to its climax with an outstanding start of the Games notable places such as Champs-Élysées and Place de la Concorde.

The opening ceremony of Paralympics will be the same in an open area outside the conventional stadium as with traffic restrictions being placed to manage the crowd after the Olympics’ boat parade on Seine in July. The Paralympics often sells over two million tickets and entails major events where impaired athletes compete at the highest level.
