FedEx St. Jude Championship, Hideki Matsuyama took on the prestigious position of writing history as the first ever Asian golfer to triumph in a FedEx Cup Play-offs.
Matsuyama is only 32 years old; he claimed his 10th career PGA Tour victory and his second championship of the year. He then relaxed with two important birdies to win the match at TPC Southwind despite losing his five shot lead only to be down by one after a four shot loss of holes 12 to 15.
He took the advantage back again and sank a 26 feet birdie putt on the 17th green using the same new putter. On the last hole, he then hit a crisp approach ball to within six feet, putting himself right back in the position to make another birdie to win the game. This victory makes him the Asian golfer with most wins on the PGA Tour after this achievement.
“I’m especially happy to be able to win one of the FedEx Cup Play-off series tournaments. I’ve tried hard for 10 years, and it’s a great feeling of satisfaction to finally be able to have done it,” said Matsuyama, a two-time winner of the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship.
Just two weeks before the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship, Matsuyama’s triumph promoted him to the third line of the FedEx Cup. He is now targeting history because since the inception of the FedEx Cup in 2007, no Asian golfer has ever won the Tour’s season-long award.
After winning a bronze medal in the Olympics in Paris two weeks prior, Matsuyama credited his Memphis triumph to Taiga Tabuchi, his substitute caddy, and a new putter.
First time I’ve worked with him (Tabuchi). On the course, you have a rhythm and a schedule and then suddenly, a new caddie enters your life. That we were working through all the week. But he was of immense assist to me. Assist in helping me to read alot of putts. A lot of good lines that he gave me. ” After starting the week ranked 133rd, Matsuyama led the field in Strokes Gained: Playing for all four rounds. This was a marked advancement.
“Coming into Memphis, I felt like I needed a change of pace, kind of a refresh with my putter. I thought about the putters I had because I knew this course and knew the condition of the greens. I thought this putter might work, and it did. I putted great, and I won,”
Matsuyama was under increasing strain as American Schauffele, who has won two Majors this season, surged up the leaderboard with a final-round 63. The reigning FedEx Cup champion, Hovland from Norway, also made a run, but a bogey on the 17th hole left him with a 66.
His first bogey of the day came when he three-putted the 12th, making things difficult for himself. Subsequently, he made a double-bogey on the par-three 14th hole, which was accompanied by a string of mishits, compounding his problems.
“After the 14th hole, I was still two-up, but I knew Viktor and Xander were playing 15, 16 ahead of me. Fifteen was not good. I flared my tee shot to the right and I didn’t want to hit it in the water, so I ended up hitting it over the green, taking two chips and ended with a double-bogey. But I had three holes left, and so I felt like I still had a chance,” he said.
After a brilliant season that included six wins and a gold medal in Paris, world number one Scottie Scheffler wrapped up in fourth place, three strokes behind Matsuyama. He still leads the FedEx Cup points standings, with Schauffele in second place, despite this.
With this victory, Matsuyama, who missed the event last year due to a persistent back ailment, makes a career return and qualifies for the BMW Championship for the eleventh time. His greatest performance at the BMW Championship came in 2019 when he scored a final-round 63 at Medinah Country Club to climb the top and finish five strokes behind Justin Thomas in third place. Matsuyama is still unsure of which putter he will carry to the competition despite his impressive showing.
