A 19 years old gymnast and the team captain from Japan’s women artistic gymnastics team, Shoko Miyata has retired from the Paris Games squad after being involved in a breach of conduct. As stated by JGA, Miyata refused to follow the basic rules of the team, in particular the rule prohibiting smoking.
According to JGA officials, Miyata arrived back in Japan on Thursday after he left the training camp in Monaco. The investigation further revealed that she was not only a smoker but also a drinker, and due to alcoholism she had left.
Speaking at a press conference, the JGA clarified that due to the latest change, the Japanese women’s gymnastics team will consist of four individuals and not five, as it was previously the case.
“We are extremely sorry for this,” JGA President, Tadashi Fujita who was also deeply bowing as was Miyata’s personal coach Mutsumi Harada.
Pressures were felt more on the team that aimed at making a podium finish for the Japanese women in football for the first time since the Olympic in Tokyo in 1964. This body blow alters their strategy and represents a huge blow to their competitive development.
Miyata, who was preconditioned to train a youthful group and first Olympians in Beijing, secured her place in Paris in May with the third successive NHK trophy. Instead of being a rock for a youthful and talented Japan team, she was to be their support.
Though recognizing that the actions of Miyata were reckless, coach Mutsumi Harada suggested that it may have been due to the pressure that she was under to succeed. It raises the profile of the ongoing mental health issues with young athletes, which made headlines recently when three-time Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles bowed out of three events at Tokyo Olympics.
Tumbling, arguably one of the much awaited events in the Summer Games, the artistic gymnastics is slated from July 27 to August 5. A member of this team means a lot and Japan is now facing even more challenges to achieve a team medal, something that has not been witnessed since the Tokyo Olympics in 1964.
"She was spending her days really burdened with so much pressure," Coach Harada said while wiping away tears. "I would implore people to understand that."
