Japanese Sensation Inoue Eyes Super-Bantamweight Glory in World Title Clash with Nery

Japanese Sensation Inoue Eyes Super-Bantamweight Glory in World Title Clash with Nery

Top Rank revealed on Tuesday that Naoya "The Monster" Inoue is set to defend his undisputed junior featherweight world title against former two-division world champion Luis "Pantera" Nery, with the highly anticipated bout scheduled for May 6 at the iconic Tokyo Dome.

Inoue (26-0, 23 KOs) is set to make his debut headlining at the iconic Tokyo Dome, with the event featuring three additional world title defenses: Jason "Mayhem" Moloney (27-2, 19 KOs) defending his WBO bantamweight title against Yoshiki Takei (8-0, 8 KOs); Takuma Inoue (19-1, 5 KOs), Naoya's brother and WBA bantamweight titlist, defending his belt against Sho Ishida (34-3, 17 KOs); and a rematch between WBA flyweight world titlist Seigo Yuri Akui and Taku Kuwahara.

Top Rank chairman Bob Arum is optimistic about the event, foreseeing it as a potential blockbuster in the world of boxing for the year.

“Naoya Inoue is the world’s best fighter, a young man who amazes me every time he steps in the ring,” Arum said. “Luis Nery is a tough challenger, but I fully expect Inoue to get the job done in front of more than 50,000 fans at the Tokyo Dome.”

The Tokyo Dome, which hasn't seen boxing since 1990 when James “Buster” Douglas secured a knockout victory against Mike Tyson, will once again be the battleground for a historic event featuring Naoya Inoue and Luis Nery.

After a three-decade hiatus since James “Buster” Douglas's knockout victory over Mike Tyson in 1990, the Tokyo Dome is set to witness another historic boxing event, this time featuring Naoya Inoue and Luis Nery.

Inoue, a four-division titlist with undisputed world titles in bantamweight and super bantamweight, boasts a remarkable record of 21-0, including 19 KOs, in world title fights. His dominance has been nothing short of exceptional, showcasing an unbeatable aura even as he moved up in weight.

Nery (35-1, 27 KOs) recently delivered an outstanding performance against Azat Hovhannisyan, elevating their bout into discussions for Fight of the Year. Currently on a four-fight winning streak, Nery has rebounded impressively since his knockout defeat against Brandon Figueroa.
