Japan's Women to Face China in Table Tennis Team Finals, French Men Also Set for Showdown

Japan's Women to Face China in Table Tennis Team Finals, French Men Also Set for Showdown

The men’s and women’s table tennis teams in China qualified for the Paris Olympics and aspired to claim all five gold medals available.

Following the rather unexpected and surprising defeat of the men’s team in the previous day to Sweden, the team of women from Japan was also seen upsetting a strong German side that was led by a promising 18 year old talent Annett Kaufmann by winning 3-1. This is a match between China and Japan and the latter is equally determined to avenge the previous year’s loss to Italy.

In the second match, young 16 years old Miwa Harimoto suffered a severe defeat from Kaufmann 3-0 in her Olympic trail but more than compensated by ensuring the victory for team Japan. In the final stage of the competition, which was the fourth round, Harimoto won the match against Shan Xiaona, 3-0, and could not score in the fifth game.

"We've secured at least a silver...but this is not the end," Hayata said. "We've come through training and qualification tournaments over the last three years, we'll carry confidence with us from the fact we're managing to stand on this stage and look to give 120 percent in the final."

Hirano and Hayata, who remained out of doubles and mixed doubles events, gave Japan a team event start with a 3-1 victory to Germany pair Xiaona Shan/Yuan in the doubles match.

But the moment slowed when Miwa Harimoto, younager sister of Tomokazu, Japan No.1ranked men singles player, lost 3-0 to Annett Kaufmann who was not easy to beaten. This was the first time that Japan was defeated in the tournament.

Hirano thus regained the initiative for Japan and partnered to see off Wan 3-0 in the third match. Japan won the quarterfinals the Olympics and the second chance to play for a gold medal after 16-year-old champion Yuya Harimoto defeated 41-year-old Wang Tai Shan in a perfect 3 sets 0 games on the last match of the day.

"I'm really relieved. It was very tough wondering whether I could change my mindset (after the first defeat) but it was positive I could get over it thinking there are five matches in this tie," Harimoto said.

At the South Paris Arena, the china’s women table tennis team proved their might by triumphing over South Korea in a lop-sided victory. This was a strategic move by Korea strategically used by Korea as a strategy to deceive the Japanese side when they withdrew their best player named Shin Yu-bin in the start of the first game.

Ranked as the first, Sun Yingsha did not take a long time to get the better of Lee Eun-hye who conceded three straight sets without putting up much resistance, the match record showing nine points only to the Chinese player’s affluence.

Wang Manyu, the next player from China, played against Jeon Ji-hee and managed to win, so the Chinese players recorded another victory. In the final match, she was able to give only three points.

"No matter what order they play in, it's the same for us," remarked Chen Meng, who defeated Wang in the initial doubles match.
