On Saturday Atletico Madrid achieved victory with a 3-0 result against weak Valencia to claim the La Liga Top position. The first goal came from Julián Álvarez in the first half while substitute Ángel Correa netted in the final minutes. The visitors kept pursuing a quick attacking tempo throughout the initial part of the match even though Valencia failed to establish an effective danger zone.

Atletico gained the lead through Álvarez after he connected with a rebound in the 12th minute. The French attacker used a header after Griezmann delivered an accurate cross which took Atletico Madrid into a 2-0 advantage during the 30th minute. During the second half Atletico Madrid slowed their attack but kept their advantage before Correa finished an immediate counterattack to ensure their win in the 86th minute.

Atletico Madrid tops La Liga with two points ahead of Barcelona and Real Madrid even though all three of their challengers have a remaining league game to compete. Barcelona in their position as second-placed team will play away against Las Palmas to reduce their point deficit on Saturday night. On Sunday Real Madrid battles with Girona in La Liga action while trying to seize first place from their current third position.

Valencia continue to plague their position at the bottom of the table. They currently hold 23 points which puts them in danger of relegation because they try to reform quickly before facing additional troubles.

"It wasn't an easy match, it's always tough to play at Valencia, so managing to grab three points here playing as well as we did gives you a lot of confidence to keep going." Alvarez told reporters,  "We are very happy, it was important to win to stay in the title race.”

Álvarez received an opportunity during the first half break to accomplish a hat-trick yet he wasted an easy near-goal opportunity.

Valencia increased their pressure toward scoring during the second part of the match while gaining control of the game. The Atletico defensive line successfully resisted all opposing attacks. Correa scored as Valencia pressed forward intensely so their defense became vulnerable before completing the fast counterattack in the final minute of regulation.

Diego Simeone applauded Julián Álvarez for his two goals in Madrid while praising his professional attitude and commitment during the match.

“He won everything by the age of 25 -- the World Cup with Argentina, the Champions League and the Premier League with Manchester City, and he continues in the vein of that humility that makes him different from everyone else." Simeone told reporters, “When we signed him, I said that I was sure he had Atleti's DNA.”
