The first wrestling gold medal to be claimed in the Paris Olympics was won by Japan’s Kenichiro Fumita over China’s Cao Liguo in the final of the Men’s 60-kg Greco-Roman category. Cao earned the silver medal for his family.
It would have been a great achievement for Japan since Fumita won the Olympic gold medal in the 55-kg Greco-Roman wrestling category becoming the first Asian wrestler to achieve the feat since Atsuji Miyahara who won the Olympic gold medal 1984 Los Angeles Olympics in the 52-kg division.
This marks the second medal for Kenichiro Fumita after Tokyo 2021 silver to complete his Paris Games on a high note. In this competition, North Korea’s Ri Se Ung and Kazakhstan’s Zholaman Sharshenbekov were the bronze medalists.
The gold in the women’s 68-kg final was clinched by Amit Elor from the United States while the silver was earned by Kyrgyzstan’s Meerim Zhumanazarova.
The other two Braves who claimed bronze medals are Nonaka Ozak of Japan and Buse Tosun Cavusoglu of Turkey.
Sailing through in the women’s 50-kg freestyle category, which was expected, India’s Vinesh Phogat upset with Yui Susaki, the incumbent champion of Japan. In fact she had only been defeated four times prior to this match and this was the first time she had lost to a non Japanese.
The final bout of the women’s wrestling competition between Sarah Hildebrandt, the American wrestler and Vinesh Phogat, the Indian wrestler shall be held on this coming Wednesday. Yui Susaki will participate in the repechage bout with the aim of getting the bronze medal.
Cuban wrestler Mijain Lopez set a record in world wrestling on Tuesday, becoming the first Olympic athlete to win five gold medals in the same instalment. Lopez, 37, announced his retirement on the spot after victory in the men’s 130-kg Greco-Roman final bout.
Lopez, who won the Men’s Greco-Roman final in 130 kg category, immediately announced his retirement.
It was amazing when of course Lopez beat Chile’s Yasmani Acosta, the silver medallist, by 6-0 in the champ de mars stadium, not forgetting that Cuban had not competed since he won his fourth gold in Tokyo three years ago.
Lopez tried to stay dominant in the ring and did just that when he cornered and decked his former training partner Acosta. In the second frame, the winner used a strong prise da terras to decide the outcome of the fight. After beating his opponent, Lopez also gave a touching signal of retirement by removing his shoes and placing them on the floor by the mat.
"It's a moment to demonstrate that someone has retired officially from the sport of wrestling and that also leaves a path wide open for the younger generation to continue inspiring others," said Lopez.
"To achieve all of these results, one has to love their sport, love their job, and demonstrate to the world that with so little you can achieve great things," he said of his career.
Lopez was not shy to entertain the crowd with a dance move after the game was over in a true extravaganza. In a wavering roar of triumph for his tough victory, he took one of his coaches to the ground and twirled the other above his head.
With perspiration dripping down his forehead, Lopez said his thank yous, and in Japanese tradition, put his head to the floor, then pulled off his shoes, which is what wrestlers do when they are retiring. Acosta, who was born in Cuba, experienced a mixture of emotions as he came to terms with the loss: joy and sorrow, and in particular, they are a muse for pride and deep sadness.
"I wanted to win gold but at the same time, not so much because it's Mijain, a legend in wrestling worldwide," he said. "We have known each other for a long time now. We did the trials together for this year's Olympic Games.
"He has been giving me advice in every phase, so he's everything, a rival, a friend, he's a brother."
