Knicks Power Past Pacers in Game 5 to Extend Series, Force Crucial Trip Back to Indiana

Knicks Power Past Pacers in Game 5 to Extend Series, Force Crucial Trip Back to Indiana

In Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals, the New York Knicks defeated the Indiana Pacers 111-94 on Thursday night, rescuing the season despite the pressure on them and the tense atmosphere in Madison Square Garden. The triumph forces a crucial Game 6 in Indianapolis and reduces Indiana's series advantage to 3–2.

New York's pillar of support, Jalen Brunson, scored 32 points and disheveled five assists. The All-Star guard set the pace and energized a Knicks offense that had struggled in prior games, despite battling a persistent right foot injury. Karl-Anthony Towns, who was playing despite a damaged knee, joined him and reminded his detractors of his postseason tenacity with a dominant double-double of 24 points and 13 rebounds.

Tom Thibodeau's improvements were evident in the Knicks' appearance, which was crisper and much more physical than in previous games. New York reacted quickly after losing Game 4 on the boards, controlling the glass 53–38 and allowing Indiana to score only 11 second-chance points.

New York's only defensive goal was to keep Tyrese Haliburton in check. And they did. The Pacers' All-Star guard, who had played a key role in their victories in Games 3 and 4, was clearly agitated by the Knicks' relentless perimeter defense as he was held to only eight points on 2-of-10 shooting. His incapacity to create rhythm overwhelmed his six assists.

“We just came out with fire,” said Brunson after the game. “We weren’t ready for the season to end. It was about heart, execution, and playing for each other.”

“It was about heart and hustle,” Hart said postgame. “We knew what this game meant. We’re not done, but we’re close.”

Josh Hart and Donte DiVincenzo also had important supporting parts. In the third quarter, DiVincenzo made two crucial three-pointers to help New York increase their lead, and Hart contributed 12 rebounds and unrelenting hustle on both ends.

Pascal Siakam led the Pacers with 22 points, but he had trouble getting reliable assistance. Despite Andrew Nembhard's 18 points, Indiana's attack lacked its typical smoothness, especially in transition, which the Knicks were keen to stop.

“We didn’t bring the edge we needed,” admitted Indiana head coach Rick Carlisle. “They were the more desperate team, and it showed.”

The momentum feels more evenly distributed now that the series is returning to Gainbridge Fieldhouse for Game 6. The stakes are extremely high because the Knicks have demonstrated their ability to perform under duress, and they have the opportunity to force a decisive Game 7 at home to end the series.

Both clubs are fully aware of the stakes as Game 6 takes place on Saturday night. A chance to pursue history and a long-awaited Finals berth for New York. An opportunity for Indiana to stop a resurgent opponent before the pressure increases.
