LeBron James reached the milestone of 39,000 points while contributing 17 points, nine assists, and seven rebounds. The Los Angeles Lakers secured an undefeated record in the NBA In-Season Tournament's group stage by defeating the Utah Jazz 131-99 on Tuesday night.
The Lakers, led by Anthony Davis with 26 points and 16 rebounds, are poised to host a quarterfinal game in the early part of next month as they progress to the knockout stages of the league's inaugural in-season tournament. Having triumphed over Phoenix, Memphis, Portland, and Utah with a cumulative margin of 74 points, this dominant win against the Jazz marks the Lakers' sixth victory in seven games overall.
Having already surpassed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's record of 38,387 points last season, the 38-year-old LeBron James achieved another milestone by becoming the first player in NBA history to exceed 39,000 points early in the first quarter.
“I got congratulated by my teammates and coaches, (but) I haven’t had an opportunity to really wrap my head around what that means,” James said. “There’s been so many great players that came across this league since the beginning of time, and so many great scorers. To be able to accomplish something that’s the first of anything, I think that’s always pretty cool. It’s a wild moment, that’s for sure.”
This milestone marks another instance of LeBron James surpassing established standards for basketball longevity. Averaging 26.4 points per game, he stands as the most prolific scorer in NBA history to reach a 21st season, further solidifying his exceptional career.
James was on the court for just 24 minutes, whereas Davis asserted his dominance during his 29 minutes, shooting 11 of 14 and contributing four assists.
“Being able to sleep in our beds and not having to travel, that’s always good,” Davis said of the Lakers’ tournament position. “We’re one step closer to winning the, uh, Cup? Is it the tournament Cup? NBA Cup? Something like that? So, one step closer.”
Despite the Lakers facing little competition in the first half, they managed to secure a commanding 23-point lead in the second quarter, courtesy of Anthony Davis's impressive performance with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Meanwhile, Utah struggled from beyond the arc, making only 4 of 23 three-point attempts and trailing 62-41 at halftime.
