Leclerc Secures Victory in F1 Monaco GP, Ending Years of Heartbreak at Home Race for the Third Time in Four Years

Charles Leclerc came out tops by emerging the winner of the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday that was to be held earlier but was stopped then only to be repeated. It was a first Grand Prix win which had been a long time in coming for a driver who had not tasted success at this level since the middle of 2000. Then he did it from pole position.

Out of four possibilities to start on the pole in his home grand prix, this was the third try for Leclerc who has not stood on the podium in Monaco. The 35-year-old has six career wins and all those triumphs for Ferrari and it was his first win after the Austrian Grand Prix July 2022.

“Tonight's going to be a big night,”  He informed his team in the racer’s communication device that was connected to the radio.

It is a tale of how a young boy, who has grown up in an apartment above the starting line and has passed most of his days watching cars pass beneath him, finds victory in Monaco as more than a mere dream.

“No words can explain that. It was the race that made me want to be a Formula 1 driver one day," the 26-year-old Leclerc said. “Seeing so many of my friends on the balcony, so many people I know. It means a huge amount to me.”

The last 15 circuits of the race were perhaps the most difficult for him because then the consciousness of what a victory would represent really began to weigh upon him.

“I must say I was thinking about my dad,” Leclerc said of his late father. “It was a dream of ours for me to race here and win, so it’s unbelievable.”

In the title race, Verstappen, flying the flag for Red Bull, started the race and also ended it in the sixth position, while Perez, his teammate, had a pretty rough start to the race as he had to pull out of the race due to a big shunt on the first lap. This collision resulted in a 40-minute red flag stoppage and eliminated Haas drivers Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg. Fortunately, the drivers of the vehicles involved in the accidents escaped without any form of injury.

The race restarted at lap 3 out of 78 and the drivers began to up their pace though they had to be wary due to the issues experienced with tire degradation on a track that offer little opportunities for overtaking. The Ferrari driver led comfortably throughout the race after maintaining a good speed throughout the race.

Oscar Piastri of McLaren completed the race 8 seconds before him, while Carlos Sainz Jr. of Ferrari secured the third place only nine seconds behind.

The fourth place went to Lando Norris of McLaren, and George Russel of Mercedes successfully defended against Verstappen to finish at the fifth place.

Thus, Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time Formula One champion, took the seventh position according to the results of the race. The list was rounded out by Pierre Gasly of Alpine, Yuki Tsunoda of Racing Bulls, Alex Albon of Williams, and Tsunoda of Yuki. It ended in the same order which reinforced the idea that Monaco is the most challenging F1 circuit in terms of overtaking.

“The pace at the beginning was incredibly slow,” Piastri said. “But it’s been a great weekend for the team.”

Right from the start it was the drama that was at the center of the events.

Magnussen tried to pass Perez on the inside and tapped the back of Perez’s right rear wheel from behind, causing Perez to spin and hit the crash barrier. It was such a pinpoint hit that PER’s car was bent almost in half and Hulkenberg’s Haas spun out as he followed.

Chaos at the course, which left debris from the crashed cars on the track led to a red flag before perez’s severely damaged Red Bull was taken away by a crane. Perez didn’t require a medical attention as confirmed by his crew though two race marshals accompanied him back to the pits while another moved on foot with him after coming out of his car.

One scary moment was the collision between two Alpines near the tunnel, which caused Esteban Ocon front nose struck Pierre Gasly’s car and made the later airborne for some moments. Ahead there was a tunnel and other cars were close behind; troubles were prevented, having been narrowly escaped in this chaos. Ocon is due to receive a five places grid penalty for a subsequent Canada GP on June 9 as a penalty for the event.

“Today’s incident was my fault,“ Ocon said. “The gap was too small in the end.”

The FIA insisted on a standing start of the race that placed Leclerc at the first position with Piastri and Sainz equally behind. Sainz had to go off track on Casino Square again as he was involved in a puncture early in the race as he tried to overtake Piastri.

Many distinguished people witnessed the occasion: FIFA president Gianni Infantino, the French soccer star Kylian Mbappé was sunbathing during the event.

The race went on like a relaxed public display whereby the vehicles toured round the 3. A total of short street circuit of 3-kilometres (approximately 2-miles) long. Leclerc made it clear that he wanted to save his tires right from the beginning up to the end of the race.

Piastri chased Leclerc and was approximately one second behind, as the race reached the halfway point, Leclerc had found his rhythm and moved away from Piastri.

“To be honest Charles has been mega all weekend,” Piastri said. “It probably would have taken the best lap of my life (in qualifying). I’m happy with P2.”

It was a different sight from onlookers’ perspective; despite some of the attendees who were using VIP tickets, the race was quite uneventful. On lap 50, Lance Stroll lost one left tire in the pit lane, there was a small crash as a result but other than that Leclerc was extremely dominant.

“It’s just impossible to get past on the streets of Monaco,” Sainz said. “But I’m very happy for Charles.”
