Wednesday night, Lionel Messi clinched his second title, Inter Miami effectively making him a 46 times club and national title winner. Growing impatient waiting for Messi to snatch the prestigious award maybe defying all odds yet Messi seems to have other thoughts in mind and prospects for continued dominance for more years after capturing more awards.
Luis Suarez also got on the score sheet and Messi was fantastic scoring the two goals. South of Virginia, Inter Miami surged on to the MLS record stating its 3-2 triumph to win the Supporters’ Shield in a dramatic fashion that they withstood the second-half charge of the defending titans, the Columbus Crew.
Messi shared his thoughts during a postgame interview, “The truth is that we are happy to achieve the first goal and now we are thinking about what is coming, right?”
Jorge Mas the owner of Inter Miami first present the Supporters’ Shield trophy with pride before taking Messi with him, celebrating with the team around the locker room.
Messi’s much-awaited signing in July the club takes new heights with Messi in Inter Miami. Since Messi joined the team, they quickly claimed the Leagues Cup, and now they have the MLS Supporters’ Shield that is the second trophy of the Messi period. The group’s objectives aren’t just limited to that as well though, there are more to it. Inter Miami’s ultimate target for the campaign is to secure a ticket for the December 7 MLS Cup final, but they are also preparing for a tilt at the next year’s Fifa World Cup tournament in the US.
“Leo was the game changer,” Head coach Tata Martino, who has coached Messi for FC Barcelona and the Argentine national team, made the statement, “Our goal is to get to Dec. 7, and we would like to play in the Club World Cup. With the names we have on our team, they could just give us a spot, but it would be more just and mean more if we earn it, and this Supporters’ Shield was very important for us.”
Messi went on to score Inter Miami two goals after the first half from the 45th minute when he scored a tap with his left foot and a free-kick in the stoppage time (45+4).
Messi, the Argentine who has triumphed in five of the games, made the fifth appearance on the field after having a right ankle injury from Copa America final in July. Lampard still doubt even when he started scoring 3 goals for the first 4 games after returning from injury. Critics were quick to suggest that he looked somewhat lethargic, meaning that he was not quite physically at his peak, and subsequently, Inter Miami had registered three successive draws which were believed to have been caused by the disruption occasioned by his come back.
However any doubts that had been made on Messi were quickly cleared by his showing in Columbus, even though it was quite clear that he will take a little while to get to that pest like form he was in beforehand, especially as the MLS Cup Playoffs approaches. Even when he was nowhere close to his vintage best, the Argentine legend came through during the most critical time and guided Inter Miami through a decisive fixture. For all his vulnerability at this stage, he is still a player that can tip the balance in Miami’s favor.
“Throughout the year we had many, many injuries, where we couldn’t all be together ... but the group was getting the most out of every tough game,” Messi said.
Messi has been a revelation since joining Inter Miami and when he has not featured in the remaining 15 of the team’s MLS games this season, he has been nothing short of sensational scoring 17 games and overall goals. However, the team managed to be a mean machine and ended their campaign with 10-3-2 record (W-L-D And bagged 32 of their 68 goals. Something even more astounding is that even from mid-June unto the end of August, Miami for some reasons and somehow never used their mascot and still they beat the odds and won eight of nine for 24 precious points.
“Even though we have a great opportunity to go down in history in that, I also think it is less important,” Messi said of the MLS points record in light of a deep playoff run.”
“The first objective has been achieved and now we have to think about what is coming, right? The first playoff matchup is best of three, but then it's a game. Anything can happen in a game, but we have a great advantage in that we play all the games at home, which is what we were looking for. I think we are very, very strong at home.”
Inter Miami is just two games from etching their name in MLS history. They face Toronto on the SATURDAY and host New England Revolution on oct 19.They . Gaining two more victories will help them collect 74 points and beat the previous MLS record of 73 scoring factors achieved by the Revolution this year. They now have 68 points. Miami is ready and heading towards the championship with Messi leading them as they prepare to make a record breaking ending to the season.
