Liverpool Rally to Defeat AC Milan 3-1 After Early Setback in Champions League Opener

Liverpool defeated AC Milan 3-1 to start their UEFA Champions League campaign after overcoming an early deficit.

At San Siro the Reds got off to a poor start, still smarting from the painful Premier League defeat to Nottingham Forest. After a slow start, USMNT star Christian Pulisic was quick to reward this with a goal, getting down the right flank and firing a low shot which Alisson could only parry into the bottom corner. But Liverpool proved how desperate they are for the win as they bounced back and used the firepower to win the match.

Arne Slots squad immediately seized the match and Konate and Van Dijk cashed in on Milan on set pieces. Corte also Milan was compounded by an injury to its goalkeeper Mike Maignan at the beginning of the game.

Mohamed Salah had the opportunity to increase Liverpool’s advantage and hit the post twice. When Maignan did leave after 45 minutes to give way to teenage debutant Lorenzo Torriani, Dominik Szoboszlai made the most of it and scored the goalthat sealed the victory for his side after good interplay with Cody Gakpo who was also impressive throughout the game.

Kostas Tsimikas set the corner that resulted in Van Dijk’s goal, which was quite a sweet justice for both players after being on the wrong side when Milan scored their opening goal. Having chosen Tsimikas over Andy Robertson in this position for slot, the Greek left-back erred in the third minute when he failed to apply pressure on Davide Calabria. Van Dijk also came out to provoke Alvaro Morata in a halfway-line situation, but the forward was clever with a pass around the young center back, which freed up space for Christian Pulisic who sprinted through the space left behind by Tsimikas. He made a marvelous run into the box and scored confidently.

Some thrilling dancing on the pitch later, Mohamed Salah struck the bar with Maignan rooted to the spot, which allowed Liverpool to regain their form. It was 1-1 twenty three minutes when Slot’s team scored an equalizer. Taking advantage of the chance created by the foul committed by Calabria in the second half on Gakpo, Ibrahima Konate got his head to the ball and scored his first goal since the FA Cup quarterfinal against Manchester City in April of 2022. After a perfect pass by Trent Alexander-Arnold, Konate equalized the score slightly overcoming the defense.

A series of decisive moments in terms of saves that Maignan pulled off one of which was quite a brave one on Diogo Jota that put an end to his night. But he remained steadfast in the 41st minute when he punched away a shot from Salah which was easy picking for Van Dijk to head in with no pressure from a free header.

Luis Diaz was not chosen, but Cody Gakpo offered a better attacking threat from the left flank. The third goal was thus due to his brilliant run that was in the middle of the second period of the game. Szoboszlai sealed the game and made a volley to match Gakpo’s equalizer after some intense fencing.

The Dutchman had a special beginning and after that, he was able to kick the foul that led to the equalizing goal. Shortly after that, he once again showcased creativity and skill by squirming through the defenders before laying it off for Szoboszlai for the third goal. His play was confident and forceful He was looking out for every opportunity to make his move forward. It was nice shuffling through the memory of this fellow who performed well in the last season and who also carried that form all through the fantastic Euros exercise with the Netherlands until he was on the field.
