Storm Boy holds the call and will jump favourite in Saturday’s $3 million Magic Millions 2yo Classic, holding firm at $2.50 after drawing barrier 10, which will come into 9 if the emergency fails to get a run.
A prominent contender from the stable of Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, the undefeated offspring of Justify secures an advantageous position, starting two barriers ahead of the second-favorite Spywire, another recognized frontrunner representing the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace team. Spywire maintains its position at $5.50, following a victory in the Aquid Gold Nugget just last week.
It establishes a promising pace on paper, and one stable aiming to leverage this scenario is the team of Tony and Calvin McEvoy. They intend to support Arabian Summer, the victorious filly from last week's Aquis Gold Pearl, who draws barrier 9, positioning her just one gate inside Storm Boy.
Arabian Summer, known for her speed and leading in her initial three starts, showcased versatility by sitting back last week. Co-trainer Calvin McEvoy sees the middle draw as an advantage, allowing them to employ similar strategic tactics this week.
“I’m happy with it, we wanted to draw probably one to five (but) I think as it played out, the favourite’s drawn one outside us in ten, she’s very versatile, she’ll be positive and she’ll hopefully be in the first four or five with some cover and I think it’s a really good barrier,” McEvoy said.
“Early on in her career we probably had her pegged as just a speed, 1000 metre filly but her last two starts she’s shown that she’s versatile, she’ll run out a strong, definitely 1100 and I think with a nice run she’ll certainly run the 12 (hundred) out so I’m very happy with her,” McEvoy added.
Having initially raced over 1000m, Arabian Summer secured victory in the Ballarat Magic Millions 2yo Classic last December. Adapting smoothly to the increased distance of 1100m last week, the stable is optimistic that the daughter of Too Darn Hot can confidently manage the additional 100m and heightened competition come Saturday.
Two additional contenders continue to hold favorable odds for the upcoming Saturday feature, with the Michael Freedman-conditioned Highness priced at $6.50. Coming off a recent triumph in the Wyong Magic Millions 2yo Classic, Highness benefits from a favorable barrier 4 draw. The $600,000 Godolphin colt, Parkour, sits at $9 and faces the challenge of the widest barrier draw, positioned at 17.
At the same time, the backers of the leading contenders in Saturday's Magic Millions 3yo Guineas might find some satisfaction, but the betting landscape sees minimal changes, with Chrysaor maintaining a slight edge at $5 over Cifrado at $5.50.
In the recent Group 3 Magic Millions Vo Rogue Plate (1350m), Cifrado, trained by Rex Lipp from Toowoomba, triumphed over Chris Waller's Chrysaor, despite starting from different ends of the draw; however, come race day, they'll share proximity with Cifrado in barrier seven and Chrysaor in eight.
A comprehensive lineup of 18 contenders, including five substitutes, is set for the $3 million race, operating on set weights and penalties rules, resulting in the two leading contenders, both accomplished Group 2 champions, sharing the highest weight of 58kg.
Should none of the horses withdraw, the duo is poised to start from gates four and five, considering that three out of the five emergency contenders have drawn barriers five or lower.
Despite starting from barrier 17, which could shift to 14 in case the emergencies are excluded, Sydney Bowler, the least seasoned contender in the race with an unblemished record from three starts, maintains odds of $5.50.
Jason Collett keeps the reins as the adept victor from the John O’Shea stable, a progeny of Deep Field, secures a decisive win in the benchmark 72 event at Randwick in the recent outing.
The lone contender within the top odds bracket is Abounding, a filly sired by Rich Enuff and under the guidance of trainer Robert Heathcote, maintaining a steady position at $7.50 despite securing a favorable draw in barrier nine, potentially reducing to six.
Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott lead the charge with the formidable Storm Boy as the favorite in the Magic Millions 2yo Classic, and their influence extends with a robust representation, featuring at least three contenders in the Guineas—setting a notable benchmark among all stables: Royal Tribute ($10) claims the 11th spot, last week's Magic Millions Maiden Plate victor Vanquished ($23) positions wide at 22, and Zouphoria ($23) secures a favorable barrier six.
