Magomed Ankalaev, the new UFC light heavyweight kingpin, makes an impression without using strong language because his supremacy in the Octagon speaks for itself, and UFC 313 was a perfect example.
In an unexpected performance on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Ankalaev defeated Alex Pereira. He demonstrated superior striking instead of depending on his well-known grappling, methodically outclassing Pereira over the course of five exhausting rounds to win by unanimous decision.
Many people in the MMA community, including both fighters and commentators, had supported Pereira to keep his championship in the run-up to the bout. However, now that he had the championship, Ankalaev was careful to respond in a nuanced yet direct manner. Israel Adesanya, Kamaru Usman, Alexander Volkanovski, Max Holloway, Robert Whittaker, Michael Bisping, and Henry Cejudo were among the prominent skeptics he tagged on X to remind them of how incorrect their forecasts had been.
“Sorry guys I disappointed you” Ankalaev wrote with a smiling face emoji.
Magomed Ankalaev has taken over as the UFC light heavyweight champion. The Dagestani fighter defeated Alex Pereira in five rounds at UFC 313 with a clinical and calm performance, earning a unanimous decision with scorecards of 49-46, 48-47, and 48-47. With the win, Ankalaev becomes just the third fighter from Dagestan to win UFC gold, joining Khabib Nurmagomedov and Islam Makhachev.
Ankalaev didn't have a good start to the fight since Pereira tested the challenger's stamina early on with a vicious barrage of leg kicks in the first round. However, Ankalaev continued to advance, controlling the pace with constant pressure, undeterred by the champion's firepower. He shifted the momentum in his favor in the final seconds of the second round by wobbling Pereira with a smashing left hand.
Ankalaev continued to work relentlessly after that. He dominated the foot-to-foot exchanges, outstriking Pereira and neutralizing the former two-division kickboxing champion's offensive output, even if he mostly ignored his wrestling. There was little question about the outcome by the time the final horn sounded; Ankalaev had solidified his status as the new light heavyweight champion of the UFC.
“I can’t even put it into words. It’s been such a long way, and it's my dream — it’s on my waist,” Ankalaev said “The plan was to pressure, pressure, pressure. Everybody who fights against Pereira always counters, but my job was to make sure that I work as No. 1, and everybody who fights against me becomes the counter-striker, and my plan worked.”
Pereira delivered some of his most accurate and potent blows while displaying outstanding takedown defense, stuffing all 12 of Ankalaev's wrestling attempts. His late charge, however, was inadequate to change the outcome because by that point the momentum had already moved out of his grasp.
“He put some pressure in the second round, I felt some of his strikes — but putting me up against the cage, he didn’t really do anything.” a disappointed Pereira said, “I knew it would be a war. Every fight of mine is a war”
