Mark Cavendish Breaks Eddy Merckx's Record with Historic 35th Tour de France Stage Win

Mark Cavendish Breaks Eddy Merckx's Record with Historic 35th Tour de France Stage Win

This might have been the last time at the prestigious Tour de France, nevertheless, Cavendish made history there. Subsequently, on Wednesday, the experienced competitor from the Isle of Man secured his victory, marking a record 35 stage races in his career to surpass the previous record holder Eddy Merckx.

Cavendish at the age of 39 began a real fight and won the sprint while leaving other competitors behind in the distance of the final 100 meters. Later on, he crossed the finish line ahead of Jasper Philipsen with sheer jubilation and relief from the teammates.

It was an exciting race and Alexander Kristoff, a Norwegian rider, crashed in the second phase of the race but managed to finish third. The winner, the second-place, and the third place all completed the race within 4 hours, 8 minutes and 46 seconds.

Cavendish even ended up asserting his desire for victory sixteen years after beginning his Tour stage success.

“I always needed to win one more,” said  Sharing the stage with his kids, Cavendish declared, “It takes a lot to get there every year. I’ve got incredible people around me.”

Two-time winner Tadej Pogacar placed safely in the main group after narrowly avoiding a crash on the roads. While Pogacar successfully defended the legendary yellow outfit, Cavendish stole the limelight of the day.

“I just wanted to get the run-in to do it. I’m a little bit in disbelief. Astana put a big gamble on this year to make sure we’re good at the Tour de France,” Cavendish said. “We’ve done it.”

He matched Merckx’s tally of 34 wins in 2021 and in the seventh stage he had a scary shot at making it 35, only being surpassed by Philipsen. However, it cost a cracked collarbone after a crash the following day.

One of the most legendary champions in cycling history as the strongest rider in his time, Merckx claimed 34 stages of the Tour for the period between 1969 and 1975. It was the right move by Cavendish to commit to that part.

After his early exit from the 2023 race, Cavendish considered postponing his retirement and giving it another shot, which he did. Cavendish clinched the stage and became the first cyclist to celebrate a stage win in Tour since 2008.

Cavendish was greeted with cheers by other cyclists who stopped to congratulate him and give him hugs after traveling 177.4 kilometers (110 miles) from Saint-Jean-De-Maurienne to Saint-Vulbas.

Unlike Cavendish, who is one of only four riders to win the Tour five times, Merckx has amassed his victories during a period of time when his dominance was so great that he was nicknamed "The Cannibal."

Cavendish was cheered by other cyclists who were able to stop and shake hands with him, as well as giving him hugs after cycling 177. From Saint-Jean-De-Maurienne to Saint-Vulbas, 4 kilometers (110 miles). However, when it comes to competing sprinters in the Tour, Cavendish has no equal in terms of endurance.

He achieved the best sprinter green jersey in the tour de France two times and had stage victories in the Giro d’Italia and the Spanish Vuelta, two out of the three grand tours . In 2011, he also emerged the winner of the global champion title.

Cavendish opted for Team Astana after his contract with Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl ended, primarily due to his exclusion from the 2022 Tour. However, for Cavendish, this Tour was marked by a terrible start. In the first stage he had stomach problems and was having a hard time because of the heat.

“I know how it works, my trainer and everyone around me knows how it is,” Cavendish said. “I’ve done 15 Tours de France. I don’t like to have bad days, I don’t like to suffer but I know it’s just in the head and to push through it.”
