Max Verstappen scored a relatively calm victory in the Qatar GP capitalizing on a bad day for Lando Norris. Having been served black and orange flags for ignoring yellow ones, the McLaren driver started the race from the rear but managed to place tenth. While Carlos Sainz claimed third place, more points for McLaren would have made Ferrari’s title defense effort pointless; instead, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc edged Oscar Piastri to place second, keep the Constructors’ Championship race alive until the Abu Dhabi season finale.
George started well in his Mercedes from the pole but Verstappen quickly closed in, got alongside and overtake Russell at the first corner. Starting third, Norris seized an opportunity presented by the battle for the lead to come in. In turns approaching Turn 2 the McLaren had a marginal lead over the pair. However, Verstappen did not allow that strategy to hinder him and built the pace for quite an enchanting first lap just to conquer the race.
When Nico Hülkenberg running for have a spin at Turn 1, mess at the tail of the field. He hit the car of fellow-Ferrari driver Franco Colapinto’s Williams and then Esteban Ocon’s Alpine car in the subsequent accidents. The marshals had to intervene by calling out the Safety Car when Ocon and Colapinto got trapped in the gravel.
Verstappen was particularly brilliant during the restart when the race got back on the track at the fourth lap, escaping the vigilance of Russell as well as a charging Norris. Piastri made his way past Leclerc with vengeance on a drive that made him regain the position that he lost in the initial stages of the race. As the field started to spread out, Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz held his sixth place, followed by Sergio Pérez of the second Red Bull.
Verstappen quickly gained confidence but that was not the cake walk. Lando Norris keep on chasing consent to cut down the gap to his rival and put pressure on him. The McLaren driver briefed with Verstappen, setting himself at 1.6 seconds for the first twenty laps; these encounters which shaped the tactical race were the preconditions.
Russell was the first of the front-runners to pit on lap 24, in the hope of trying to get an advantage over the others. It all went well until a right rear tire gave him a big problem and added more than two seconds to his time. The Mercedes driver re-joined the racetrack in the 11th position, a position he most certainly did not expect to be in after right strategy, only to find that he had spent an unimpressive seven seconds in the pits.
More of the front runners were willing to go in for their planned pits and this was when the race suddenly decided to turn in an entirely new direction. Worrism white signs were waived while Alex Albon, the Williams driver, lost a mirror on the pit straight at lap 32. Reddening, Verstappen thought he saw Norris in the chaos coming closer and contacted his team to make sure no driver was exceeding the yellow flag speed limits. Individuals were waiting for clarification, and the groups were looking forward to it.
It began getting a little rowdy two laps later. The array of debris on a track is evident was when Valtteri Bottas’s Sauber drove over Albon’s abandoned mirror. Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz both punctured after coming into contact with shards and could only get back to the pits slowly. The mayhem didn't stop there. An already equally matched race produced even more drama because of the Safety Car that managed to reshuffle the running order.
t did not take long for Norris to complete his challenge. This never happened as his refusal to heed the yellow flags before the first safety car period warranted the mclaren driver a 10second stop go penalty. When the checkered flag was waved he was back up in tenth position but that was after getting closer the rear of the field after a pit stop on the 45th lap.
Verstappen, on the other hand, was very much on top of the race, cruising through the competition without incident. The young man finished the race six seconds before Leclerc and easily won the race without encountering more challenges. Piastri came out of another aggressive scrap for the top five by scoring third, albeit only a tenth behind.
Russell also made a strong result in a fourth position, while Gasly scored a decent fifth. Sainz got the sixth place followed by Alonso. Zhou performed very well getting the Sauber its first points of the season and coming in at the eighth place. Magnussen came in ninth just ahead of Norris, to round out the top ten.
