Maximilian Guenther Triumphs in Historic Tokyo E-Prix for Maserati MSG Racing

Maximilian Guenther of Maserati MSG Racing secured victory in the debut Tokyo E-Prix, besting Oliver Rowland from the Nissan Formula E Team who started from pole position.

Tokyo E-Prix was not only a personal achievement but also a significant moment for Formula E as a whole. With the win, Guenther joined the ranks of other talented drivers who have claimed victory in the fiercely contested Season 10. This outcome underscores the unpredictable and closely contested nature of Formula E racing, adding excitement and intrigue to the championship.

Guenther's triumph at the Tokyo E-Prix was a masterful showcase of both talent and tactical prowess. Seizing the lead on Lap 24, he secured not only his team's first victory since Season 9's Jakarta race but also marked his fifth career win in the series, highlighting his consistent excellence on the track.

Although Guenther ultimately emerged victorious in the Tokyo E-Prix, his journey to the top was fraught with challenges, notably from Rowland, who fiercely defended his position in front of his home crowd for the Nissan Formula E Team.

Guenther, aged 26, demonstrated strategic prowess by capitalizing on the slipstream of British driver Rowland, using this aerodynamic advantage to conserve energy for a decisive surge towards the race's conclusion. Despite Rowland's persistent attempts to overtake and reclaim the lead, Guenther skillfully maintained his position, successfully fending off three challenges from Rowland during the crucial final lap of the race.

In a testament to the fierce competition of Season 10, the Tokyo E-Prix upheld the trend of diversity in winners, with five races yielding five victors from distinct teams. This trend underscores the heightened intensity of the championship battle, as evidenced by the narrow differentials among the top three contenders, often separated by mere milliseconds, while the entire field remains within a ten-second margin.

Jake Dennis, the current Drivers' Champion representing Andretti Formula E Team, clinched third place in the race, showcasing his prowess on the track. Behind him, the Tag Heuer Porsche Formula E Team's drivers, Antonio Felix da Costa and Pascal Wehrlein, secured fourth and fifth place respectively. Wehrlein's impressive performance not only contributed to his team's success but also propelled him to the top of the Drivers' World Championship standings, highlighting his dominance in the competition.

Nico Mueller, representing ABT CUPRA Formula E Team, claimed a respectable sixth place, showcasing his skill and determination on the track. Meanwhile, Nick Cassidy delivered an impressive performance by surging from 19th on the grid to secure seventh place, demonstrating his remarkable ability to navigate through the pack. However, Edo Mortara's initial seventh-place finish was marred by disqualification due to energy overuse, serving as a reminder of the strict regulations governing Formula E racing.

After the conclusion of Round 5 at the Tokyo E-Prix, Jaguar TCS Racing emerges at the forefront of the Teams' World Championship standings with an impressive 100 points, closely trailed by TAG Heuer Porsche at 83 points. As the championship heats up, Pascal Wehrlein heads to Misano holding a slim two-point lead over Nick Cassidy in the Drivers' Championship standings, setting the stage for an exhilarating competition in the upcoming races.

Guenther said: “I think we executed the race pretty well, the strategy was good, and I pulled off a few good moves to move up and then we defended against Ollie right up until the last lap. It was pretty tight. It definitely wasn’t easy; I think I just surprised him in Turn 10.”

“It’s a great track, it’s very challenging and very technical and then to win the first ever Tokyo E-Prix — it’s a huge feeling. I think in general we can be really proud of what we’ve done this weekend; being in the top three in all the sessions, always up there, and then to walk away with the winning trophy is great.”

“It’s amazing that we’ve raced here. It’s such a nice city and such a nice country. I love the culture, and we’ve felt very welcomed here.”

Formula E ventures to Italy for an exciting double-header event, marking its inaugural visit to Misano on April 13th and 14th.
