MLB Teams Eyeing Chunichi’s Shinnosuke Ogasawara, Five Clubs Show Interest in Posting Left-Handed Pitcher

MLB Teams Eyeing Chunichi’s Shinnosuke Ogasawara, Five Clubs Show Interest in Posting Left-Handed Pitcher

Shinnosuke Ogasawara, the 27-year-old left-handed pitcher from the Chunichi Dragons, is drawing significant interest from Major League Baseball (MLB) teams after announcing his intention to pursue a move to the U.S. through the posting system this offseason.

Ogasawara officially applied for posting on November 1, following Chunichi’s approval of the process. The development comes shortly after the conclusion of the World Series, which marked the unofficial start of the MLB offseason, sparking heightened attention on the Japanese left-hander. With this move, Ogasawara is set to test the waters of the MLB market, and the “OGASAWARA” name is now on the radar of several major league scouts.

Over the past four years, Ogasawara has proven to be one of the most durable pitchers in Japan’s Central League, reaching the required innings pitched in each season. His fastball spin rate has drawn particular attention, surpassing the MLB average, while his vertical knuckle curveball is considered a unique offering within American baseball. In recent years, he has also developed a slider and, this season, added a forkball to his repertoire, expanding his pitching arsenal as he enters his late 20s.

Several MLB teams have shown strong interest in Ogasawara as a potential reinforcement to their starting rotation. While the Angels (American League West) and Blue Jays (American League East) finished at the bottom of their respective divisions this season, the Mets (National League East), Cubs (National League Central), and Giants (National League West) all finished competitive campaigns, with the Mets and Cubs tying for second place in their divisions. Additionally, all five teams have previously had Japanese players on their rosters, which could facilitate the adaptation process for Ogasawara should he make the jump to MLB.

With the MLB offseason now in full swing, the negotiations surrounding big-name free agents are ramping up. The MLB Winter Meetings, where general managers and agents will gather in December, will serve as a key moment for Ogasawara’s agent to push for a successful posting process. The next few weeks will be crucial as the left-hander looks to secure his MLB future, with the negotiation window set to begin in mid-November.
