In the first round of the US Open on Tuesday, the recent champion Naomi Osaka defeated Jelena Ostapenko with scores of 6-3, 6-2 that generated the extend of her first triumph over a top-100 player since October 2015.
Osaka’s performance and the green bow she wore even when she was entering the tennis court would remain in the memory of people. She knocked off No. 10 seed through centralizing her power on powerful serves; an indication of resumption in the high profile tennis.
Osaka had started her maternity break early this year, ranked 88 in the world, yet, played some of her mature tennis after returning. The defending champion of the US Open played 19 powerful winners, of which nine were aces and five of them were unforced.
Finally, Osaka stated that she knew that she was apparently holding back tears when she said that there were times she would be unable to play on the Louis Armstrong Stadium.
“I didn’t know athletically, physically if I was able to and just to win this match and just to be in this atmosphere means so much to me.”
“I remember last year I was watching Coco (Gauff) play and I so badly wanted to step on these courts again and I didn’t know if I could,” she said in her on-court interview.
Three significant victories have marked Osaka's 2024 comeback: In singles, she came from behind to win in her first match as soon as she stepped on the grass, was beaten to rise to win her first Wimbledon trophy since 2018, and reached a WTA 1000 tournament quarterfinal. But the four-time grand slam winner has not shy away from revealing that she also faced some difficulties when she returned to the tennis court, as she had become a mother.
Earlier this month, Osaka shared in an Instagram post that she doesn’t... “feel like I’m in my body” and that she is “missing balls I shouldn’t miss, hitting balls softer than I remember I used to.”
“I think just keep focusing, keep trying to play really well, but overall have a lot of fun,” she said.
“But moments like that are so precious to me and I just can only hope that I can keep having more.”
“Actually, last night my daughter didn’t want to go to sleep on her bedtime, so I had to hold her for quite a while and I was like, ‘Oh wow, she really picked the perfect day not to go to sleep!’”
Osaka said about her game plan as she readies for her second round clash against Czech Republic’s 2023 contender, Karolína Muchová. It also discussed her eye-catching dress which had small green bows on her sneakers, and she said that unlike her dresses for other grand slams, this New York dress she is wearing is much more flashy.
“I feel like being able to be a part of my tennis outfits gives me, I would say, a different strength,” Osaka explained. “Especially the US Open outfits, I feel like they are a little bit more flamboyant. When I was putting on my outfit today, I was, like: ‘Ah, I hope this isn’t too much!’
“Because I had the tutu and then I had the bow jacket and it was green, I feel like everyone was staring at me funny. And then I put the headphones on, that was a real killer.
“I was like, you know what, embrace this maximalist style.”
