Naomi Osaka overpowered Frenchwoman Diane Parry, thus emerging victorious in her first Wimbledon match since 2017. It was good fight that showed ability and fighting belief of Osaka. Picking up the last two games in the third set, she was able to shut out her opponent with a 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 scoreline.
This overwhelming performance was evident when she spoke to media during the press conference after the match, expressing her feelings as fun, yet stressful: “It felt really fun and really stressful at the same time … the match I think was a little up and down, but I think overall it was something that I can take a lot away from. ”
Osaka has also commented on her struggles on grass courts and has said that she is working hard to build a positive attitude. As for the fourth question, she stated she is relatively self-critical and can sometimes be a pessimist about her optimistic performance.
In 2021, she decided to temporarily step down from the tennis courts as a Japanese star. She decided to skip the French Open over the issue of her mental health, and then suffered a loss at the U. S. Open.
Osaka has been inactive since getting pregnant with her daughter Shai, who is now one year old and will be celebrating her birthday on Tuesday. Last week Osaka withdrew from the Eastbourne International tournament, saying she wanted to focus on preparing her daughter’s birthday party.
“I think my mindset last year was just trying to survive,” she said. “I honestly didn't know what was going on after I gave birth, but yeah, just trying to piece myself back together.”
She added, “It feels really, really cool. I feel myself constantly being surprised by things on the ground and it’s just really nice to win a match.”
The 24-year-old Japanese, currently ranked 113rd in the ATP rankings, received a wildcard to participate in the Wimbledon tournament this year. Severin has clinched all her four major championships on the US Open and the Australian Open hard surfaces, but she never got past the third round at Wimbledon.
Osaka will face 19th-seeded American Emma Navarro in the second round on Wednesday.
“Wimbledon is, I wouldn’t say the place where the dream started but maybe where I believed the dream was possible,” she said in her post-match interview.
“I’ve played on a lot of big courts but every time I play here, it’s the most nervous I ever feel playing tennis, even more than playing a grand slam final.
