Naoya 'Monster' Inoue Defended His Unbeaten Super-Bantamweight Titles After An Early Stoppage vs TJ Doheny in Tokyo.

Naoya 'Monster' Inoue Defended His Unbeaten Super-Bantamweight Titles After An Early Stoppage vs TJ Doheny in Tokyo.

The pound-for-pound monarch Naoya Inoue successfully defended the championship of the International Boxing Federation in the super bantamweight division in rather unimpressive fashion on Tuesday by stopping Ireland’s TJ Doheny in the seventh round of an expected bout at the Ariake Arena. As you can see, the round was officially stopped at precisely 0:16.

Despite his ferocious reputation, Inoue (28-0, 25 KOs) adopted a very pace himself waiting strategy in the early rounds to avoid allowing the powerful Doheny to seize control of the fight. By the middle of the fight, Inoue seemed ready to take the fight on to the canvass. It was apparent that Mel still had a fighting chance of winning after a close exchange in the round where Doheny handed her a body shot and was clearly in pain in her back. In any case, the referee did not hesitate to intervene, and the match was over in the shortest span of time.

“Probably this fight didn’t end the way we expected, but I have a long career, so please expect more in the next match. I am still in progress. I’d like to celebrate the fight TJ Doheny brought to this ring and his career.”

“I think it was a punishment],” stated Inoue in his interview following the battle. “I continued my fight one round at a time, and I know that boxing is not easy. I slowed him down and gave my opponent damage.

Despite the fierce conviction, the champion emerged victorious in the initial two rounds with solid right punches to the belly of Doheny. As always a showman, Inoue would would cup his hands triumphantly every time Doheny stumbled over his lead foot especially when the orthodox fighter meets a southpaw! Doheny was not able to play but it looked like he was having the time of his life. The Irishman was able to get into a groove in the third round and initiated the body attack and landed some good punches to the head.

From the fourth round onwards, Inoue upped his performance while the Japanese comprehend the situation as more of an annoyance than a threat. He was relentless and fixated on Doheny, repeatedly pinning her against the wall and hitting her body with his fists. The sense of aggression from Inoue rose with each round and the noise of his attacks grew louder.

Doheny was knocked down by a strong combination as the sixth round ended and he received several shots to the head and body. This assault may have precipitated the damage that caused the battle to end sharply just a few seconds into the next round. Despite the fact that it was not the spectacular drama as a rule occurring in “The Monster Show”, such kinds of results are much too frequent in the sphere of contact sports.

Inoue must have found it quite exhilarating to rise through the ranks and get to the level of dominance. Marlon Tapales and Stephen Fulton were left with no choices but to submit to the champion who then utterly dominated the super bantamweight division. Satisfied with that, the Japanese phenomenon faced the strongest puncher in the division, Luis Nery, and after a knockdown, delivered a punch that made Nery fall and remain unconscious.
