Nate Diaz Redeems UFC Loss with Majority Decision Triumph Over Jorge Masvidal

Nate Diaz Redeems UFC Loss with Majority Decision Triumph Over Jorge Masvidal

In the main event, Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal stepped into the octagon with bad blood between them as they rematch for the first UFC BMF title won in 2019. And this fight was not held on the Octagon but in the ring for a rematch of their first encounter. The last time they faced each other, the fight was called a draw but this time, Diaz emerged as the winner by decision.

It was an entertaining bout characterized with tensions and counter tensions. It was Diaz’s constant volume striking and forward pressure against Masvidal’s more potent bursts. The winner of the fight can be determined solely depending on the preference in terms of the style, as the bout could have ended with the victory of either contender.

It was during these attacks where Diaz’s handspeed advantage became apparent as he threw right and left hooks that while not having much real power behind them, put Masvidal under constant pressure, forcing him to retreat to the ropes on a number of occasions. Between those constant exchanges, Masvidal responded with punches that were thrown in loops and from an awkward southpaw stance, but with significantly more authority.

While Diaz was landing a high number of punches for the round, Masvidal was able to land more punches in total, 182 of them compared to Diaz’s 151.

“I thought I won, I thought I hit the harder shots, he did land more volume but I definitely thought I landed the way, way better shots,” Masvidal told reporters in the ring post-fight.

“We can do it again, we’re 1-1, I thought I won that one, we’ll find a place to do it and do it again. “The harder shots, 100 per cent I landed them, everybody saw that.”

After ten strenuous rounds, the three ringside judges awarded Diaz a majority decision of 95-95, 97-93, and 98-92.

Of course, Diaz did not shy away from making a spectacle of himself by flipping around at one point and even facing away from Masvidal to address the excited 18,000 Honda Center fans. As much as he was dropping some pivotal punches that forced him to break in the fifth round while Masvidal began pursuing, Diaz was unfazed.

In the sixth round, Diaz showed how he had one of the best chins in the game by nonchalantly parrying an overhand left with his right hand. His arrogance, however, came to his detriment in the eighth round where he lowered his guard to mock “Gamebred”. This was an enthralling fight that employs strategy, determination and the usual Diaz attitude of ‘machismo’.

In the eighth round both of them slow down a little bit, but given they are 39 years old and have fighting experience in combat sports the output is quite respectable. The last round was charged till the last bell yet neither of the two managed to pull off the knockout blow.

After the victory, Diaz provided hints that there are potential opponents out there and he also mentioned the possibility of returning to MMA.

"It feels good to get the job done, for sure," Diaz said, adding a bit of respect after a contentious build to the rematch. "Mission accomplished. ... I could feel the love out here in Cali every time. Shout out to California. It's whatever. It's always been respect for anybody who is fighting."

"I'm going to beat Jake Paul's f---ing ass and I'm down to fight the highest ranked boxer I can find," Diaz said. "My main objective is always to be the best fighter in the world so I want to go back to the UFC. Leon Edwards, Jake Paul and anybody the f--- else, you're dead."
