NBA Western Division Rankings: Grizzlies Surge with Ja Morant, Rockets’ Remarkable Comeback, and Last Season’s Lower-Ranked Teams on the Rise

As of December 10, 2024, with about a quarter of the NBA season complete, the Western Conference is shaping up to be a thrilling battle, with several unexpected teams rising in the ranks. Here’s a look at the standings:

The Oklahoma City Thunder, who clinched the top playoff seed last season, are continuing their strong form this year. Leading the charge is ace Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, averaging an impressive 29.8 points per game. On the defensive end, Jalen Williams has emerged as a key contributor, averaging a career-high 2.1 steals per game. The Thunder are also recording a high 12.1 steals per game as a team, showcasing their aggressive defense.

A significant turnaround story this season is the Memphis Grizzlies, who finished 13th in the Western Conference last year due to injuries to key players. With Ja Morant back in action, the Grizzlies are making a strong push towards the top. Morant has been providing highlight-reel plays, and the team is benefiting from his electrifying presence on both ends of the floor. In addition, the emergence of Japanese talent Yuki Kawamura, who signed a two-way contract with the team, is generating buzz, particularly among local fans.

The Houston Rockets have been one of the most impressive teams in the Western Conference this season, jumping from 11th place last season to the current third spot. The Rockets are riding the momentum of an incredible 11-game winning streak that closed out their previous season. Their impressive play continues into 2024-25, as they aim to solidify their position as one of the league’s most exciting teams.

The Los Angeles Lakers, with Rui Hachimura contributing to the team, are currently in 8th place. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on teams like the Lakers, and other lower-ranked squads from last year, to see if they can make similar jumps in the standings.
