Netherlands secured a resounding victory of 7-0 against Vietnam in Group E of the Women's World Cup 2023.

In a dominant display, the Netherlands advanced to the last 16 of the Women's World Cup as group winners, leaving the United States behind, with a stunning 7-0 victory over Vietnam on Tuesday. Esmee Brugts and Jill Roord shined, each netting two goals, surpassing the previous record for the biggest win at the Women's World Cup, which was Germany's 6-0 victory against Morocco.

Before the game, Dutch coach Andries Jonker voiced his ambition for the 2019 finalists to claim the group's top spot, seeking to avoid a match against Group G leaders Sweden, who achieved an impressive 5-0 triumph against Italy during the weekend.Jonker's team granted his wish, putting on a remarkable show against Vietnam, who experienced three consecutive defeats in their Women's World Cup debut.

In Dunedin, 8,215 spectators were treated to the Dutch goal bonanza.

In the opening 23 minutes, the Dutch quickly netted their first four goals, highlighted by Brugts' impressive top-corner shot. Throughout the entire 90 minutes, Vietnam found themselves under constant pressure as the Dutch recorded an astonishing 42 shots on goal. Early on, at the eight-minute mark, Lieke Martens opened the scoring with a graceful lob over her marker and Vietnamese goalkeeper Thi Kim Thanh Tran.

In just three minutes after the opening goal, forward Katja Snoeijs confidently placed her shot inside the post to extend the lead to 2-0, leaving goalkeeper Tran helpless. Brugts contributed to the goal spree with her impressive third goal, followed by Roord's skillful volley from a cross, marking her first goal at the 23-minute mark. As halftime approached, Tran made an exceptional save to deny Roord, but midfielder Danielle van de Donk was swift to capitalize on the rebound, making it 5-0 at the break.

During the second half, Vietnam brought in Thi Hang Khong to replace Tran in goal, while the Dutch fielded 17-year-old Wieke Kaptein, making her third appearance. Brugts maintained her impressive performance, scoring another goal from outside the area with a forceful strike into the opposite corner, leaving Khong no chance. Despite Martens having a goal ruled offside by VAR, Roord, who had previously hit the woodwork, found the net with a header for the seventh goal, just seven minutes before the final whistle.
