Newly crowned Abu Dhabi Grand Prix champion Lando Norris saw off Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz to ensure McLaren secured the Formula One Constructors’ World Championship for the first time in a generation. This amazing achievement restores one of the sports most recognizable teams to dominance and ends one of the most tireless seasons.
McLaren’s night under the floodlights at Yas Marina was far from comfortable, despite starting the last race from the front two places and looking to be the masters of the teams’ championship race. On the first turn, Oscar Piastri was hit and launched off the track from Max Verstappen which made a possibly regular race even more interesting.
Norris once again won the race for the fourth time this year by starting from pole to win the 58 laps race without being challenged from Sainz. This he did by claiming the McLaren’s eighth Constructors’ Championship, the first time since 1998 and widely regarded as a feat. Other zones of his performance, for example, stress tolerance and exactness, jumped out at me.
Ferrari had a good finish with their season even if they tried to pursue the almost impossible 21-point comeback on the last day. Charles Leclerc had an amazing drive to go from the back of the grid to try and challenge for third place while in his last race for the team Sainz kept it cool and calm and finished second. It even got attention from the captivating drive of Lewis Hamilton whose high-profile transfer to Ferrari in order to replace Sainz was in preparation. His farewell was given an additional coda when he made up for the starting position of 16th and coming home fourth in his last race for the Silver Arrows.
It will be remembered that Hamilton has defended his title 12 times in a row and his last lap while still racing for Mercedes was surely epic. Turning nine was probably the most dramatic and risky move that he decided to make a clean break away from the colleague, George Russell by sweeping around him.
Max Verstappen, the defending champion, who had clinched his fourth consecutive drivers’ championship two weeks ago in Las Vegas, had a bitter end to the season. Verstappen barely finished the race taking a far sixth position after being knocked by Oscar Piastri at the first corner. Worse still, the referees made it worse by awarding him a 10-second suspension for beginning the fight, odd as this was in an otherwise unblemished career.
Other news is that Pierre Gasly finished the seventh position on the leaderboard, while Alpine took the sixth position in Constructors’ Championship and provided an incredible performance in the last race. Haas also had good reason to celebrate as Nico Hülkenberg was able to bring Haas home to eighth place in standings which is a credible end to rather challenging campaign.
His steady season performance saw Fernando Alonso secure ninth place for Aston Martin. Oscar Piastri followed him from 10th place through a race which he was able to contest despite various challenges that he faced.
Piastri’s recuperation was not as plain as the proverbial voyage, or so we presumed. He had to pit for end-of-lap-one repairs after an accident but when he got back into the race, he was given a 10 second penalty for his hit on Williams driver Franco Colapinto. Nevertheless, thanks to a lot of effort, the teenage driver secured a points place showing the audience some extent of perseverance.
